Georgia, you're on the clock

So now it's on for Georgia, a program that has never been a preseason No. 1.

The Bulldogs debuted at on top of the coaches' poll Friday, which is nice for about 13 seconds in the SEC. Now the pressure builds. The Bulldogs will face something eight coaches this season who have won national championships. The schedule is tougher than breakfast steak. And how weird is this: Florida is ranked No. 5 but was picked over Georgia in the preseason media poll to win the SEC.

Only two teams in the last 10 years have gone wire to wire, USC in 2004 and Florida State in 1999.

The good news: Five of the last six preseason No. 1s in the coaches' poll have at least played in the BCS championship game. USC broke a streak of five in a row last season.

The breakdown of the last six preseason No. 1s:

2002: Miami lost the BCS championship game to Ohio State

2003: Oklahoma lost the BCS championship game to LSU

2004:  USC beat Oklahoma (preseason No. 2) in the BCS championship game

2005: USC lost the BCS championship game to Texas

2006: Ohio State lost the BCS championship game to Florida

2007: No. 2 LSU beat Ohio State (preseason No. 10) in the BCS championship game. Preseason No. 1 USC finished No. 2 in the coaches poll.

Georgia, you're on the clock

UGA didn't exactly take the easy route on the non-conference games.  Aside from the traditional Georgia Tech matchup and the Georgia Southern game, UGA's other non-conference game are two-time defending MAC champions Central Michigan and #16 ranked ASU.

Put it in perspective--USC's highest-ranked conference opponent this year is ASU, which it plays at home.  UGA is is using one of its open dates to travel 2000+ miles to play the same team on the road.  Yes, USC did schedule Ohio State as one of its non-con games, but you also have powerhouses Notre Dame and UVA on your road schedule, which collectively won exactly one game more than Central Michigan.  USC didn't even bother scheduling a 12th game, so you can't mock UGA for scheduling Georgia Southern when USC will be playing the practice squad in non-contact jerseys for a 12th game.

Having said all that, I'd personally pick UGA and USC as the two best teams in the country, and, while I'd take even money on UGA in a game on a neutral site, I see it as being a very close game.  USC has athletes who are just as good as UGA's, but I'd give the edge to UGA just because UGA is likely to have played several teams that are nearly as good as USC, while USC will have played, at most, one team at UGA's caliber (OSU), and that very early in the season.  When two championship caliber teams meet, the edge usually goes to the one that's faced more teams of that caliber during the season.  That's not USC's fault, it's just that the rest of the PAC 10 just isn't that good.

Oregon would have at least played for the NC had Dixon remained healthy. Not only that, he should have won the Heisman. I can't wait for football to start so we can get over this North/South, Big Ten/SEC smackdown and start talking about FOOTBALL! Yes, the SEC had a dominating year last year and the Big Ten was down BUT that was last season. As for the PAC-10, I got nothing against you guys, Cal beat up on my UT Vols last season (whose record would indicate they were the second best team in conference) and I can't wait to start the season against UCLA.

Ya Ya Ya!!! and if the Oregon Ducks could have kept only 2 of their 7+ starter's that had season ending injuries last year they would have been National Champion's hands down, no question they couldn't be stopped, ask the beloved Michigan Wolverines. lol.............Go Ducks

Awesome dude!  Someone just took the words from my mouth before I could spew them........LOL!!!  PAC10 is similiar to SEC in contrast to how tough it is to play in the respective conference. The SEC contends they have the most dominant defense, and for the most part are pretty solid at defense. "But" try to put that defense against an Offense like Oregon or USC and see what happens to it........USC will destroy all comer's this year hands down!!! I'm a Duck Fan, but I know what's coming to us all this year.  "A large size AssWhippin'"....and with that said     &

go Ducks..................and go PAC10

Gentlemen, use common sense here and throw away your silly jeolousy. I don't even live in SEC country and I can tell you there is no comparison. It's like NFL-B and everyone else is just college. Don't hate, just appreciate. The NFL does. Look at the rosters. No comparison. I'd love to say the Big 12 and Pac 10 were close, but they're not. The ACC, nope. The Big 10... are you kidding me?

i guess it's good that the only thing Ohio State fans have going for them is dogging an SEC team to start the season, because everyone knows they won't be able to at the end of the season. The cupcake schedule (other than USC) that they play I'm sure they will be playing another SEC team and the outcome will be the same. Live it up know while you can!!!!

i just don't understand why some non-GA fans are acting so surprised with the #1 ranking. everyone's been saying that they'd be pre-season #1 since last season ended.
