Georgia, you're on the clock

So now it's on for Georgia, a program that has never been a preseason No. 1.

The Bulldogs debuted at on top of the coaches' poll Friday, which is nice for about 13 seconds in the SEC. Now the pressure builds. The Bulldogs will face something eight coaches this season who have won national championships. The schedule is tougher than breakfast steak. And how weird is this: Florida is ranked No. 5 but was picked over Georgia in the preseason media poll to win the SEC.

Only two teams in the last 10 years have gone wire to wire, USC in 2004 and Florida State in 1999.

The good news: Five of the last six preseason No. 1s in the coaches' poll have at least played in the BCS championship game. USC broke a streak of five in a row last season.

The breakdown of the last six preseason No. 1s:

2002: Miami lost the BCS championship game to Ohio State

2003: Oklahoma lost the BCS championship game to LSU

2004:  USC beat Oklahoma (preseason No. 2) in the BCS championship game

2005: USC lost the BCS championship game to Texas

2006: Ohio State lost the BCS championship game to Florida

2007: No. 2 LSU beat Ohio State (preseason No. 10) in the BCS championship game. Preseason No. 1 USC finished No. 2 in the coaches poll.

Georgia, you're on the clock

I think it's yet another knock on the BCS that the preseason #1 in the coaches' poll has done no worse than finish number 2, and that all but that team have appeared in the national title.

The polls in college football are such a self-fulfilling prophecy.  If you start number 1, and don't get completely embarrassed, you're going to finish in the top.  It takes an act of God to unseat you, just like it takes an act of God for someone not in the preseason polls to climb anywhere near the top.

Georgia, you're on the clock

I am sick and tired of everyone who talks SEC, they have to mention the brutal schedule.  Screw thier brutal 'conference' schedule.  Why don't they go out and play more tough non conference foes?  SEC teams always hide in the SEC and say 'oh, it's soooo tough.'  It's not SC's fault that they have been like Jordan was...'heads above the rest' since 2000.  SC has played SEC teams and guess what?  Can you say undefeated?  Bear Bryant can attest to the talent that has been there.  For UGA fans to think this is 'their' year, get thorugh your schedule before you say such things like  'If that happens then it looks like the SEC will be beating the crap out of another OSU team or possibly USC which is what I want.'   SC' is not Michigan, SC is not Hawaii, and SC' certainly is not ASU.  People say 'speed kills'...add power to that, and you got SC'.  I certaily hoped that UGA would've made it to the Rose last year.  I think it would've been a great match, a possible prelude to the 09' NC in Florida.

Good Luck

C mon guys UGA killed everyone at the end of the year last year. The truth is they were a young team that grew up and destroyed everyone they played. No one wanted to see them in a bowl game including the team that won it all because they were playing better than anyone at the end of the year. The teams they beat by an average of 15 points or so in their last 5 games were all quality teams. Auburn by 25, Florida by 12, Kentucky by 11( I know, but kentucky did beat the NC's), GA tech by 14, and smoked the only undefeated team left at that time Hawaii by 31. They also have the nations longest winning streak @ 7 games. I'm not saying they will win it all, but with all the returning talent they have, number one in either poll is no stretch.
