Sox to go with Buehrle if Game 5 is necessary

CHICAGO -- The switch is on: If the Chicago White Sox can get their AL Division Series to Game 5 on Wednesday, they'll hand the ball to left-hander Mark Buehrle.

"That's the guy, the best guy we have," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said Monday before Game 4.

The change means Javier Vazquez, whom the Sox no longer trust in their biggest games, gets bumped. It also means that Vazquez and left-hander Clayton Richard will be available in long relief -- not only in Game 5, but in Game 4 later today if Gavin Floyd is chased early.

"Right now our bullpen is fresh," Guillen said. "Right now, we see Floyd and as soon as Floyd comes out and it's not (going) the way we thought he is going to be, you are going to see a couple of guys up right away.

"We can't sit down and hope for one good inning. And you are going to see Richard up right away. Like (Sunday), we are going to bring (Matt) Thornton in the sixth because I thought we need to get that done in the sixth in case (John) Danks was in trouble. And you know, you don't see Thornton in the sixth during the season.

"But now, Thornton, (Scott) Linebrink, you're going to see them early in the game if we have to."

Sox to go with Buehrle if Game 5 is necessary

Fortunately for the Rays, game 5 was not necessary, just like this article. The Rays are headed to the ALCS, and Chicago is left with two teams that got eliminated in the 1st round.

At least the Cubs and the White Sox fans can commiserate together.

Sox to go with Buehrle if Game 5 is necessary

Buehrle can have all the rest he needs because there won't be a game 5. I'm surprised that the White Sox still think that they can beat Tampa Bay. They just don't have the pitching to match against Tampa Bay. Chicago's hitting isn't up to par with Tampa Bay's either. Good try though. At least the White Sox are putting up a fight. You can't say that about the bumbling Cubs. They got swept by an inferior opponent from the weak National League West. If that was not embarrassing then I don't know what is.

Thank you for pointing this out because every CBS article I have read has said short rest as well. Did all of these CBS writers forget how to count?

Sox to go with Buehrle if Game 5 is necessary

Not important right now.  We have to get through game 4 before we can begin to think about game 5.  That being said I am as nervous as I can be right now.  I believe the Sox can beat the Rays tonight, but its an hour before game time and my stomach is flipping!!

I too hope to see Mark Buehrle pitch again this year.  64 minutes until the first pitch on the south side.  Go White Sox!

Sox to go with Buehrle if Game 5 is necessary

If all things were equal going into the series Mark Buehrle would have started game one.
Buehrle needed to pitch the Sunday before to help get the White Sox in the playoffs. That was the reason he was not available for game one.
As a White Sox fan I just hope he gets a chance to pitch in game 5 on Wednesday.

The switch is on: If the Chicago can get their AL Division Series to Game 5 on Wednesday, left-hander will start on short rest.

Just to be clear -- Mark Buehrle would be starting on normal rest in Game 5.  He started Game 2, which was played on Friday.  Saturday, the teams were off, Sunday was Game 3, Monday is Game 4, Tuesday is a travel/off day, and Game 5 would be on Wednesday.  Saturday-Sunday-Monday-Tuesday = 4 days...normal rest.
