Dodgers appear close with Casey Blake

LAS VEGAS -- Don't be surprised if the Dodgers and third baseman Casey Blake reach an agreement in the very near future.

Blake's agent, Jim McDowell, has been holding out for a three-year offer, and the Dodgers appear poised to meet it -- while the Minnesota Twins indicated the other day they would not budge beyond two years.

"If we can get Casey locked up, it would be a huge piece for us," Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said. "We'd be able to move Blake DeWitt over to second base. Casey's character, he's team-oriented, he's a grinder.

"We love having players like that."

Colletti is mad.  Apparently he loves having players that don't get on base.  The two Blakes are offensive liabilities, not positives.

Casey is just barely over league average, but the price tag is crazy.

DeWitt just plain sucks.  No power and doesn't get on base enough.  But at least he is cheap.

Nice... the Dodgers offered a 37 yr old head case $20 mil for 3 years, then they sign a 36 yr old 3rd baseman. You add in the $20 mil they are wasting on Andruw Jones and you have a real winning situation. I can sure see why they are avoiding Sabathia- he's in his prime, he would never fit in with their talented kids and their overpaid stiffs. The steroid era is over, old players decline like they did before MCGwire-Sosa...see post-steroid Ivan Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa etc.
