CC down, Burnett next?

LAS VEGAS -- The expectation is, with CC Sabathia now off the board, the path is cleared for other pitchers to begin signing. And right-hander A.J. Burnett is in prime position to move quickly.

"It's hard to say," Darek Braunecker, Burnett's agent, said here Wednesday afternoon. "Obviously, that's kind of an important piece to determine what the market will bear and who remains in the mix and where the money could be headed. It's probably beneficial."

With the average annual value (AAV) of the Sabathia contract just under $23 million a year, Burnett and Derek Lowe, among others would slot in accordingly.

Meantime, even though the Yankees bumped the deal up to seven years and just over $160 million from six years and $140 million, the AAV is less. In the six-year offer, it was $23.3 million.

What does that mean? Well, for one thing, the Yankees, according to sources, remain interested in signing two more starting pitchers even after bagging Sabathia. And their resources still seem strong. The Yankees told Braunecker that Sabathia was completely separate from Burnett, and that one was not related to the other in negotiatons.

"We've known all along that they intended to sign CC and another pitcher," Braunecker said. "The deals were always independent of each other."

Meantime, Atlanta is far down the path in talks with the right-hander.

Could there be a resolution with Burnett by, say, the end of the day today?

"Anything is possible if the right deal presents itself," Braunecker said.

Still, as of midafternoon local time Wednesday, nothing was imminent. Braunecker had meeting scheduled for much of the remainder of the day.

CC down, Burnett next?

ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?!? I have NEVER added a comment to one of these boards but after reading yours I absolutely had to sign up!!

Did you seriously just suggest the Yankees should make a trade for Peavy by sending Cabera and Kennedy?!? Please tell me I read that wrong!! I cannot begin to tell you how idiotic that proposal is!! WHAT UNIVERSE DO YOU LIVE IN!! I am a Red Sox fan and I assure this is not a hating thing! I dont worry about the Yanks, really, they are a great organization and always dangerous but the Sox also are right up there these days. I also have to listen to idiots and their red sox trade suggestions to...BUT THIS ONE TAKES THE CAKE!! Jake Peavy is probably the second or third best pitcher in BASEBALL!!! Why in gods name would Kevin Towers (he's the SD GM in case you didnt know - which I am sure you didnt) accept a deal like that?!?

While we are at making bazoro universe deals I think the Red Sox should trade Bucholz and JD Drew for Johan Santana!! Then go out and get texeria and maybe I dont asolid bat...Jesus Christ available to play SS???

Finally  for the guy who put Chamberlain, Burnett, CC as the three rotation guys for the Yanks if they get Burnett i hope that was NOT your rotation order!! First off Chamberlain would be your 4th or 5th starter and it would certainly go CC, Wang, Burnett!!

YOU GUYS SHOULD STOP WATCHING BASEBALL!!! YOUR WHAT IS WRONG WITH FANS!! THIS IS WHY ALL OF US LOGICAL FANS HATE OUR OWN TEAMS FANS!! THAT GOES FOR REDSOX, YANKEES, CRADNALS, METS, PHILLIES AND ALL THE OTHER FANS THAT HAVE STRONG FOLLOWINGS WITH SOME LOGICAL ONES AND SOME MORONS!!!

The first thing I think is that Goldens is a sterotypical Sox fan. More worried about what we do then what his team does. Hey Goldens, what are you going to say about money if the Sox sign Tex to an 8 yr/$160 million deal? Not a thing, you'll boast about what a great move it is, just like you did when they signed Manny to a similar deal. If you're gonna come on the board, bring more to the table than some ridiculous, hypocritical remark because Sox fans have no business talking about how much cash the Yankees spend, not with your payroll.

OK, now that we cleared that up, on to more exciting news. I am not one bit worried about a CC/Pavano parallel. CC is a workhorse who takes the ball every 5th day(and sometimes every 3rd day as we saw last year) as opposed to Pavano who takes the ball every 5th year. His stats have gotten better each of the last 3 years and I see a young pitcher who is on the rise. Did we overpay? Maybe a little bit, but not if he keeps getting better since his $$ is about the same as Santana and nobody would argue Santana's value.

If they can sign Burnett/Sheets, Lowe and Pettitte it would be fantastic because then we put Joba back in the 8th inning and we not only have arguably the best rotation in baseball, there is no doubt we have the best bullpen in baseball and we prepare Joba to take over for Mo. With 4 innings eaters, we can "protect" Burnett/Sheets with our bullpen.

We aren't going to get Peavy, he doesn't want to pitch in NY and the Padres are not going to give him up for Cabrera and Kennedy. They might do it for Cabrera, Hughes and Kennedy, but Peavy still doesn't want to pitch here.

Swisher is going to do a lot more for the lineup than you think. He sees a lot of pitches(most pitches per at-bat in the majors the last 3 years), has a good OBP and has plenty of power for the RF porch. Plus, don't forget that getting Jorge and Hideki back healthy is like signing two FA bats. Don't  get me wrong, I'd love to see Manny in pinstripes, but laying out $20+M/year for another LF/DH is not what we need at this point. I like Gardner in CF. He's scrappy, fast, plays great D and is only going to get better at the plate, especially with all the thunder we already have in the lineup around him.

We need power pitchers guys who can blow guys away with a change up...Sabathia and Burnett can make that happen for us. We need guys who can strike out 10 on a given night. Because we play with the power hitting of the American league, I am a yankee fan and I know thats the kind of pitching we need. With Burnett on the squad and in the rotation we have the potential to go to the WS. We need to be able on any given night be able to compete with Garza and the Rays, and Beckett and the Red Sox. Along with the hitting that comes with those teams and the rest of the AL.

Burnett:  Absolutely plagued with real and imagined physical problems most of his career.  If not a "bad" apple, not a good one.  Not to be gotten at a bargain.  He is the mistake that CC is not.  Hope it doesn't happen.

Giambi:  Ah...wha...who...huh?  We have replaced Giambi.  His name is Nick Swisher.  He will easily match Giambi's numbers next season and is a clubhouse guy to the max.

Abreu: It's a loss.  But we have an OF jam of mediocrity.  I like moving dead weight to make room, otherwise, do something aggressive like the rumored/maybe never true/now dead Cano/Melky for Kemp.  Cano is not deadwood, but Melky is a #4 OF on a team full of them.  Damon.  Matsui.  Gardener.  Ugh.  Nady is nice.  We need someone, but I don't like paying up for what's available.  No easy answers here.

Manny: Let's not and say we did.  Please.  Oh god.

I don't think the Yankees can trade for Peavy because the only team he will waive his no trade clause for is the Cubs.  It looks like the Yankees might sign Burnett and Sheets so the rotation should be pretty good.

I don't like Burnett.  He has been plagued with real and imagined health issues for most of his career and if not a "bad apple", is certainly not a good one.  There is no baragin to be gotten with him either.  I like Lowe better, along with Pettitte or Sheets Iif he can be gotten at a bargain.  As far as replacing Abreu/Giambi...ah...Giambi doesn't need to be replaced.  Swisher will do fine in that if he underperforms.  I heard that there was a rumor about LA liking Cano and swapping he and Melky for Kemp.  Man, that would be sweet.  Not that I've given up on Cano, but Holy Kemp.  Odawg can be had at a bragain.  There is a log jam of medicrity in the OF right now.  I don't like adding a big OF salry w/o shedding some.  Don't wish too hard for Burnett.  He is the cautionary tale Yankee haters wish CC was.  CC might fade before 7 years is up, but he has 3-4 lights out years in him, and is a great clubhouse guy.
