Manny Ramirez suspended for 50 games

Posted on: May 7, 2009 12:51 pm

Manny Ramirez has stepped into a lot of history books lately, but Thursday he stepped into the wrong one: Biggest name to be put on ice for 50 games after failing a performance-enhancing drug test since baseball got religion about steroids.

That sort of takes the edge off of the Los Angeles Dodgers' record 13-0 home start, doesn't it?

Ah, dreadlocks!

Baseball never caught up to Barry Bonds. Sammy Sosa disappeared. Mark McGwire melted into a puddle in front of Congress. Alex Rodriguez actually did fail a PED test, but that was before it resulted in suspensions. And baseball never outed him, that information was leaked.

This, this is 100 percent, prime-time, major-league baseball driven. And it does two things:

1. Whatever you've thought of baseball's testing program, Ramirez's suspension Thursday adds credibility to it. Loads. Because this side of A-Rod or, perhaps, Albert Pujols, there is no bigger fish in the game. For baseball to whack an impact player like Manny, Lordy, Lordy. The reverberations will be felt deep into the corners of every clubhouse in the game.

2. It hollows out Ramirez's numbers because, until now, and especially lately after his run last year, all conversation surrounding Ramirez has included the phrase "one of the greatest hitters of all-time." Really? Maybe. If you can get past the new stain.

Somewhere, A-Rod no doubt is smiling, at least a little, in anticipation of his pot being turned down to simmer from full boil.

Over in Mannywood, this blow is devastating to the Dodgers. Barely a month into the season, there already are signs all over the place that this was shaping up to be a special summer. The home start, the best record in baseball, the 6 1/2-game lead over San Francisco in the NL West.

But now, instead of turning the divisional race into a blowout and storming toward their first World Series since 1988, the emergency brake has been yanked on the Dodgers. They'll have to muddle through without Manny for nearly a third of the season. Without an appeal and assuming the suspension begins tonight against Washington, if my math is right, Manny won't be eligible again until July 3.

The glee in Boston already is deafening. Though now we must play the game of "How long has Manny been on the juice?" and you figure that this all didn't just start yesterday. Does it compromise what he did in Fenway (and, consequently, the two World Series the Red Sox won with him)? Does it date back to Cleveland?

All we know for sure is, the game suffered another cataclysmic earthquake on Thursday. Manny, dreadlocks and all, will never be viewed the same again.

And regarding the Dodgers' 13-0 home start: Turns out, that is one heckuva unlucky number, isn't it?

Teeth?  I hate to play the Pete card, but that dude was banned from baseball for LIFE.  Manny cheated and will be back in a Dodger uniform before the All-Star break.  And given the fact that fans, however unfortunate get their say in the choosing of the All-Star squads, I wouldn't be terribly shocked to see him suit up for the NL in St. Louis.   Manny & Bud Selig should be banned for life.

Pete Rose didn’t even cheat.

Really!

How can you honestly believe that someone can compete with and beat cheaters with NATURAL ability?
Can't be done. Don't fool yourself.

He has Big Mac to teach him how to work the needles, and soon enough your hair will blowing in the wind.

Calling into question the world series wins??? I never recall that being said about the Yankees wins when it is KNOWN that Clemens and Pettite used banned substances.

Give me a break!!  All this does is deprive us of a good baseball player.  Everybody in baseball is doing this.  The dumb ones get caught.  And I mean REALLY dumb!    The reason Manny exists is to entertain us.  Period.  Juice them up and let them play.

Waides World, I was talking to you, btw, and I forgot the to destroy the most assinine part of your entire post-

Manny did NOT come clean, he claims they were used for some private medical reason when everywhere under the sun is reporting that those drugs are not prescribed for erectile dysfunction- viagra or cialis or something is.  They are used for producing testosterone when a steroid user's levels are down at the end of their cycle.

Stop bringing Bonds' name into it.  Stop throwing stones from your glass houses.

To the moron who several pages ago said, "He's still better than Bonds", I just want to ask; better at what?  When Bonds was being questioned NOBODY was coming clean.  Then, after he so graciously protected the game's secret in service to the evil powers that be it became apparent that a perjury charge was coming his way thus making it impossible for him to admit it after others began to w/out going straight to jail.

Circumstances were far different.  Get a clue.  If anything, Manny is "worse" than Bonds because Bonds played from 86-99 clean as a whistle.  Can Manny say that?  Probably not.  Same thing w/ Arod, Pujols, Hanley Ramirez...  etc.

I feel betrayed as a baseball fan and as an Indian fan, I considered myself a big Manny fan.  Wow!  Now, it makes you wonder who isn't or hasn't taken performance enhancers?  All the big numbers put up over the last decade, the names listed by Jose Canseco (who has much more credibility now, amazingly), now come with heavy and warranted suspicion.  This sucks.....I hope to god that guys like Howard and Pujols are legitimate athletes instead of the cheats that have tarnished the game!!  It wouldn't surprise me now if everything mentioned by Canseco is true.  It's a crying shame for all of us diehard baseball fans....

Manny had E.D??? The drug is not a PED or steroid but a Levitra type drug to treat men with a long history of steroid use. Interesting.
