Manny Ramirez suspended for 50 games

Posted on: May 7, 2009 12:51 pm

Manny Ramirez has stepped into a lot of history books lately, but Thursday he stepped into the wrong one: Biggest name to be put on ice for 50 games after failing a performance-enhancing drug test since baseball got religion about steroids.

That sort of takes the edge off of the Los Angeles Dodgers' record 13-0 home start, doesn't it?

Ah, dreadlocks!

Baseball never caught up to Barry Bonds. Sammy Sosa disappeared. Mark McGwire melted into a puddle in front of Congress. Alex Rodriguez actually did fail a PED test, but that was before it resulted in suspensions. And baseball never outed him, that information was leaked.

This, this is 100 percent, prime-time, major-league baseball driven. And it does two things:

1. Whatever you've thought of baseball's testing program, Ramirez's suspension Thursday adds credibility to it. Loads. Because this side of A-Rod or, perhaps, Albert Pujols, there is no bigger fish in the game. For baseball to whack an impact player like Manny, Lordy, Lordy. The reverberations will be felt deep into the corners of every clubhouse in the game.

2. It hollows out Ramirez's numbers because, until now, and especially lately after his run last year, all conversation surrounding Ramirez has included the phrase "one of the greatest hitters of all-time." Really? Maybe. If you can get past the new stain.

Somewhere, A-Rod no doubt is smiling, at least a little, in anticipation of his pot being turned down to simmer from full boil.

Over in Mannywood, this blow is devastating to the Dodgers. Barely a month into the season, there already are signs all over the place that this was shaping up to be a special summer. The home start, the best record in baseball, the 6 1/2-game lead over San Francisco in the NL West.

But now, instead of turning the divisional race into a blowout and storming toward their first World Series since 1988, the emergency brake has been yanked on the Dodgers. They'll have to muddle through without Manny for nearly a third of the season. Without an appeal and assuming the suspension begins tonight against Washington, if my math is right, Manny won't be eligible again until July 3.

The glee in Boston already is deafening. Though now we must play the game of "How long has Manny been on the juice?" and you figure that this all didn't just start yesterday. Does it compromise what he did in Fenway (and, consequently, the two World Series the Red Sox won with him)? Does it date back to Cleveland?

All we know for sure is, the game suffered another cataclysmic earthquake on Thursday. Manny, dreadlocks and all, will never be viewed the same again.

And regarding the Dodgers' 13-0 home start: Turns out, that is one heckuva unlucky number, isn't it?

Manny Ramirez suspended for 50 games

The bottom line is these guys are cheating. I have been waiting my entire life to see the Chicago Cubs put a team together like they had last year. They got swept by a team who's marquee player was cheating. It's frustrating.

These guys need to be banned from baseball. what they're doing is far worse than anything Pete Rose ever did. Throw out the A-Rod's and Albert Pujols's of the league if they're cheating.

We'll still watch.

Scott Miller: What a Genius

Scott Miller:  "t hollows out Ramirez's numbers because, until now, and especially lately after his run last year, all conversation surrounding Ramirez has included the phrase "one of the greatest hitters of all-time." Hey Scott, can you at least tell us what banned substance they found in Manny Ramirez before you lump him in with AROD and call him a juicer?  What if ... yes, what if it was a substance that was actually legal?  And what if it was actually prescribed by a real doctor for a legitimate medical condition?  And what if it wasn't a steroid?  Doesn't that make your entire article a joke?  Yes it does.

You're no better than Red Sox fans who will revel in this suspension because their former MVP jumped ship.  If Manny took an illegal substance then he DESERVES the 50 game suspension, as well as all the negative publicity and scorn that comes with the suspension.  But, as a journalist, can you at least try to get the facts before you start questioning "all his numbers"  He passed his past 15 tests and gets caught on this one.  Hmmm, ok so if he already knew how to beat the system, then why didn't he do it this time?  It doesn't ring true.  Right or wrong, you're more guilty (and not alone from what I can see) of cheating the fans with this reckless article than Manny.  So if he DESERVES his 50 games, what do you deserve?

It is amazing how MLB is now crucifying the same people that they built up.

Few years ago MLB (Commissioner, front office, owners) Knew PED's were being used and they had no problems with it.  As a matter of fact they loved how the juice and long ball were bringing in the fans.  Now that the issue is brought out into the light they are free to say how bad it is for baseball.  This is after MLB reaped all the monetary benefits and receive no penalty for their part in the whole steroid era.

The Yankee WS wins have already been brought into question.  I think it's dumb to do that to any of the WS wins.  There are probably around 80% of the players out there that use something or other.  If they're all cheating then the winners also beat out opponents that cheated.  So by unfortunate logic, it's all legit because it's all tainted.

You're an idiot sympathizer...he was masking and cheating.  Maybe they wouldn't be doing these if morons like you would stop defending them.  Why hide?  If they are clean they should be willing to test anytime.  He was taking testosterone!  What a chick!!

Manny Ramirez suspended for 50 games

MLB knew he tested positive and he still was allowed to play yesterday.  They should take the win away and the record!
