Twins acquire Orlando Cabrera

The Minnesota Twins have acquired shortstop Orlando Cabrera from Oakland in exchange for minor-league shortstop Tyler Ladendorf, has learned.

Cabrera, 34, has come on strong lately at the plate after a very slow start. He was hitting .280 with a .318 on-base percentage in 101 games for the Athletics, and he arrives in Minnesota with an 11-game hitting streak intact. He's hitting .375 (18 for 48) over that stretch and, since July 1, he's batting .373 (41 for 110) with eight doubles, two homers and 16 RBI.

The acquisition for the Twins comes less than an hour after AL Central-leading Detroit acquired left-handed pitcher Jarrod Washburn from Seattle. The Twins, weak in the middle infield with Brendan Harris (.264) at shortstop, Alexi Casilla (.171) at second base and Nick Punto (.208) spelling them, also were talking with Toronto about Marco Scutaro.

In acquiring Cabrera, the Twins gave up their second-round pick from last summer's draft, Ladendorf. Initially, the Athletics were focused on outfielder Aaron Hicks, rated the Twins' top prospect in 2009 by Baseball America, and third baseman Danny Valencia, whom the Twins think is their third baseman of the future.

Cabrera is due roughly $1.25 million in salary this season, plus a $250,000 bonus for being traded. He is expected to arrive in Minnesota in time to play in Saturday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Twins, who also receive an unidentified amount of cash from Oakland in the deal, remain in the market for a relief pitcher.

Only two negative comments I've seen were from Red Sox fans.
Maybe we should get Ocab on the juice, it obviously helped in breaking the curse.

Is this just a case of doing something to do something. The players called for something and so were the fans. Do we really solve and problems here? I think not, other than Punto can finally sit on the bench more often, which is a postive.

It's too bad the Blue Jays are too stuborn to trade Roy Halladay, because Marco Scutaro would have been a MUCH better fit.  We could have straight up signed Cabrera ourselves this offseason, but decided against it for some unkown reason, and now lost a prospect to have him for half as long as we could have.  Ridiculous.

I'd give Punto the 2B job, but would be fine letting Casilla continue as long as he keeps up the solid ABs.  Decent move, now go get Halladay since we need SP more than anything.  Should have landed Washburn.

It doesn't matter, Frank Viola isn't walking through that door!

Still bitter about the can of whup-ass we (and the Tigers) opened last series? Losing 6 of 7 to your rivals can hurt.

While this is not a huge move, Orlando Cabrera will be better than Alexi Casilla and Nick Punto everday in the lineup.  It makes the Twins a little stronger offensively, and we seemed to be OK before the trade in that category. I would assume Casilla or Brian Buscher is now headed for Rochester.

I agree with most posters, we could surely use middle-relief and/or a starter. While Anthony Swarzak may fill-in nicely for Kevin Slowey, getting a hard throwing reliever, or a steady starting veteran might solidify the AL Central is a two team race, and sorry to say GNR, your White Sox make three.

Enjoy Getz, Fields, and Beckham.

Maybe we should just "juice" up to try to win against the Yankees....Seems to have worked for the Red Sox

After SWEEPING the White Sux...This is a good move to keep momentum going....Cabrera will fit nicely...Now we need another relief pitcher and should be ready to go for another Central title....

Who are the Red Soxs?  Once you make the post season, none of the regular season games mean a hill of beans, and right now I'd give the Twins a better shot at making the post season then the Red Sox, or should I say Red Soxs.
