Red Sox acquire Victor Martinez from Cleveland

Striking late and dramatically, the Boston Red Sox bolstered their lineup by acquiring All-Star catcher Victor Martinez from Cleveland less than two hours before Friday's non-waivers trade deadline, CBSSports.com has learned.

The Indians will receive three young pitchers in exchange: Right-handers Juston Masterson and Bryan Price and left-hander Nick Hagadone.

The blockbuster deal comes following several days during which the Red Sox were hot on the trail of Martinez, San Diego slugger Adrian Gonzalez and Toronto ace Roy Halladay. Martinez, a three-time All-Star, was batting .284 with 15 homers and 67 RBI in 99 games for the Indians this season and arrives in Boston with the Red Sox having fallen into second place in the AL East, two games behind the New York Yankees.

The addition of Martinez is a huge boon for the Red Sox, who are concerned with the health of catcher Jason Varitek, 37, and who have watched slugger David Ortiz regress some this season. Martinez can catch, play first base and, of course, serve as designated hitter.

Masterson was 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 31 appearances with the Red Sox this season. Over the past two seasons, he has worked for manager Terry Francona both out of the bullpen and as a spot starter. Hagadone is a big, 6-5 lefty who was Boston's first-round sandwich pick (55th overall) in the 2007 draft. Price. 22, was a first-round sandwich pick (45th overall) in last year's draft.

The trio fits what Cleveland now is looking to accomplish, re-stocking its system with as many young arms as possible, after trading two Cy Young winners in the past two seasons -- Cliff Lee this week and CC Sabathia last July.

Why give up Clay Bucholz when the Indians are so willing to take unproven "prospects".  Nice move Shipiro... break up a team that had 2 Cy Young winners in back to back years, a 3 time All Star switch hitting catcher/1st baseman/DH, a versatile 3B/Outfielder/1st baseman (DeRosa), and misc. other parts (Betancourt, Garko, Casey Blake, etc.) and rebuild.  Makes sense to me.  Wait until all the pieces you've put together over the last 6 years mature and then trade the good ones away.

BTW- real nice move signing Westbrook to a fat 3 year contract and overpaying for Hafner (in a year it was obvious he had lost it).  Without those 2 bonehead signings, maybe the team could have afforded to pay Victor and Cliff for 2010.

I'm done as an Indians fan after 50 years, and I'm sure many other Indians fans are as well.  Good work Shipiro and Wedge!

funny how a trade of an indian turns into an arguement between the yankee fans and bosox fans....pathetic!

you would have thought that it maybe a discussion between indians fans and themselves or indians and bosox fans but no......what a joke...baseball is dead to me what a joke......

LETS GO STILLERS!

gabe paul rides again. we traded two of our top three players for nothing. how about grady for hughes and melky that would complete the trifecta? none and i repeat none ,of the players we got will be with the tribe in three years.

i dont get "YANKEE" fans, your team is 22 games over 500, you are in first place in probably the hardest division in baseball with the sox and still a decent rays team with OK teams in Toronto and Baltimore. The Yankees have a really good team and i am  not a Yankees fan or sox fan, but since they dont make a big splash fire everybody, i mean who would you want to manage this team, torre is in LA and i read on some blogs willie Randolph who last i checked could not make it with the mets. I guess i understand that Yankees fans are passionate but there are about 20 franchises out there that would kill for the money the yankees spend, the talent they have on the field. Cashman is trying to make the minors what they were when they had jeter, rivera, bernie williams in his day, homegrown great talent but just continue trading it away i guess is the answer, i dont know as much as i would like my team to be like the Yankees or sox i guess i dont because all that success and money brings way to much DRAMA.

ROID SOX fans are so original, always yapping about buying championships....they seem to have been better losers than they are winners the past few years, stooping to the level of the worst of the worst amongst yankees fans over the time(s) of their success....cause boston sure hasn't acquired ANYBODY via free agency during 2004 nor 2007 that helped them win a world series, nor have they spent any money in the offseasons to acquire players that would go on to help them win a title.....such hypocrites...now that it has been determined that another IMPORTANT player/contributor on those mentioned WS teams of this decade, will they look the other way?? of course, standing ovations to one of thier "own" who abuses/used that garbage, they also glorified a bozo who QUIT on them, encouraging the behaviour of Manny all those years, ignoring, conveniently, his character flaws in relation to the integrity of the game, all in the name of success. this is a question for all the non developmentally arrested baseball/ROID SOX fans out there who can use their noggin to come up with more than "they buy championships" : if money buys championships like they like to toss out there on occassion, why then, do the Florida Marlins have more WS titles in their short existence, than the Mets, or Braves, or Phillies or Angels in the last 15 years, or as many as Boston even though their payroll is amongst the lowest year after year?? The way the game is now (unlike the 40's/50's and 60's) MOST EVERY team spends some money IF they are in the running for the playoffs, yet ONLY 1 team wins the World Series EVERY year, so I guess whomever wins said year, and if that team acquires a player that wasn't on their opening day roster, can it be said they BOUGHT a championship?? over used expression at best, get over it, teams compete if they want to win, leave it at that

As a disgusted Yankee fan it would have been nice for us to at least compete during the trade dead line. We got nothing but a utility player who can fill in for a broken down A-Rod. I think its time for the Steinbrenner family to do the right thing and fire Cashman and the incompetent Girardi. Meanwhile the elite Red Sox reload, restock and are fully prepared for the stretch run. I am another embarrassed Yankee bum waiting till next year. Bwwwahhhh!

Your an idiot....  The roid sox didnt just go out and aquire a big $ player?  Stop with the jealousy.  Roid Sox had there chance and could have had Texiera in off season but once again failed to get the players just like they did with A-Rod.
