Red Sox acquire Victor Martinez from Cleveland

Striking late and dramatically, the Boston Red Sox bolstered their lineup by acquiring All-Star catcher Victor Martinez from Cleveland less than two hours before Friday's non-waivers trade deadline, CBSSports.com has learned.

The Indians will receive three young pitchers in exchange: Right-handers Juston Masterson and Bryan Price and left-hander Nick Hagadone.

The blockbuster deal comes following several days during which the Red Sox were hot on the trail of Martinez, San Diego slugger Adrian Gonzalez and Toronto ace Roy Halladay. Martinez, a three-time All-Star, was batting .284 with 15 homers and 67 RBI in 99 games for the Indians this season and arrives in Boston with the Red Sox having fallen into second place in the AL East, two games behind the New York Yankees.

The addition of Martinez is a huge boon for the Red Sox, who are concerned with the health of catcher Jason Varitek, 37, and who have watched slugger David Ortiz regress some this season. Martinez can catch, play first base and, of course, serve as designated hitter.

Masterson was 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 31 appearances with the Red Sox this season. Over the past two seasons, he has worked for manager Terry Francona both out of the bullpen and as a spot starter. Hagadone is a big, 6-5 lefty who was Boston's first-round sandwich pick (55th overall) in the 2007 draft. Price. 22, was a first-round sandwich pick (45th overall) in last year's draft.

The trio fits what Cleveland now is looking to accomplish, re-stocking its system with as many young arms as possible, after trading two Cy Young winners in the past two seasons -- Cliff Lee this week and CC Sabathia last July.

Hmm, probably the same guy who killed the Indians for the Colon trade after booing Belischick out of town.
Cleveland people really know their sports!

You have a catcher who is your captain I believe.

You have a 1B that is very good.

You have a DH already.

Sure, getting Martinez who is a very good player is good but which of the 3 above are going to be replaced?  Talk about not addressing your real needs!  Sorry RS Nation, this isn't going to get you over the hump this year.  Now, if you had hired a new steroid dealer then you might win the East.

As it stands right now the Sox give up Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone, and a third lower level prospect.  Im not a huge Victor Martinex guy but to get him not have to give up Bucholtz, Bowden, or Bard is really a no brainer.  To make room, the Sox appear to be sending Adam Laroche to either Atlanta or the Mets - probably for a releiver.  Make a quick note - the pieces that Toronto were looking at for Halladay are still there and we still have 46 mins.

I've noted this on another Indians trade thread, but as a Cleveland fan you should be VERY happy that your owners/GM are ready to move guys that are nearing the point where they're going to drop off.  They got decent value (assuming Masterson, Bard or someone comparable is in the deal) and Martinez is a 31 year old player with the wear and tear of playing catcher on his joints.

Trust me, if you are a fan of a small-market team you WANT this.  Who cares if you win 68 or 73 games?  You want to clean house and get solid prospects so you have a chance to make a run every 5 years or so.  Otherwise, it's just a holding pattern of mediocrity.

I like adding Victor as insurance all-around, but I don;t consider this a "big" move.

This is great, long overdue move by the Red Sox. Varitek is finished. He is great guy to have on your team but not as a catcher anymore. he has a noodle arm and his body is beaten up. Every team that gets a runner on first (even a 300 pound gorilla) tries to steal on him...why is this?..because they know he is finished. he can't hit (especially left handed..never could). Tex always had a stooge to catch Wakefield because he can't. They dumped Lugo and now Tek is on his way out. You have to be strong up the middle and Tex is a weak link. They still need a good shortstop to accomplish this. Tek will go honorably though....He was freat handling pitchers but its time to move on Sox....good move.....finally!

Sox did a good deal, no Buchholz or any top guys

just Masterson and a minor leaguer

Tigers look like they'll take the central
