Red Sox acquire Victor Martinez from Cleveland

Striking late and dramatically, the Boston Red Sox bolstered their lineup by acquiring All-Star catcher Victor Martinez from Cleveland less than two hours before Friday's non-waivers trade deadline, CBSSports.com has learned.

The Indians will receive three young pitchers in exchange: Right-handers Juston Masterson and Bryan Price and left-hander Nick Hagadone.

The blockbuster deal comes following several days during which the Red Sox were hot on the trail of Martinez, San Diego slugger Adrian Gonzalez and Toronto ace Roy Halladay. Martinez, a three-time All-Star, was batting .284 with 15 homers and 67 RBI in 99 games for the Indians this season and arrives in Boston with the Red Sox having fallen into second place in the AL East, two games behind the New York Yankees.

The addition of Martinez is a huge boon for the Red Sox, who are concerned with the health of catcher Jason Varitek, 37, and who have watched slugger David Ortiz regress some this season. Martinez can catch, play first base and, of course, serve as designated hitter.

Masterson was 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 31 appearances with the Red Sox this season. Over the past two seasons, he has worked for manager Terry Francona both out of the bullpen and as a spot starter. Hagadone is a big, 6-5 lefty who was Boston's first-round sandwich pick (55th overall) in the 2007 draft. Price. 22, was a first-round sandwich pick (45th overall) in last year's draft.

The trio fits what Cleveland now is looking to accomplish, re-stocking its system with as many young arms as possible, after trading two Cy Young winners in the past two seasons -- Cliff Lee this week and CC Sabathia last July.

sniff, sniff, please beat the Yankees.  Didn't the Sox spend like a hundred million just to talk to DiceK?  Now, stupid statement number 2....... We defeated the Mets in the 2000 World Series and lost to the Diamondbacks in '01 and to the Marlins in '03.   That was the Aaron Boone year, remember that?  I bet you were one of the loudest idiots yelling A-Roid this year.  So what now that we find you're number 3 and 4 hitters were on the juice?  Even if the Yanks go 10 years without winning one it's still a far cry from 86 years before winning 2 tainted ones.

Lee made himself into something these past few years, but it took him a while to do that.  We aren't looking to rebuild.  We had the pieces in place to make a push this year and definitely next year.  But once again, trade away the cy-young winner and are only consistent hitter.  WE DON'T WANT PROSPECTS.  They don't do us any good with the players that we have now.  I'm glad that the Phillies prospects will be able to compete for a spot next year.  Shouldn't be hard to beat out Kelly Shoppach!!!!  He gave up nothing to get the reigning cy-young winner.  Did Colon ever win the cy-young and how long did we keep Brandon Phillips?  Like I said before, "WE DON'T WANT PROSPECTS!"

You're a tool!  The Red Sox go 100 years without winning anything, then you win 2 World Series and all of the sudden you guys have the textbook formula for success?  Let me guess, you're a Patriots fan also?  Typical blowhard Sox fan.  Oh and by the way your Red Sox have one of the Top 5 payrolls in MLB.  Now get your F'in Shine Box!

Martinez is making relatively little compared to some of the abominable contracts the Yankees have on the books. They are and will always be the Evil Empire, trying to buy championships...

What's the difference? Let me explain (for the 5,000th time i think): The Sox TRADED their own players to get him. No one blames the Yankees when they TRADE to get players to better their team, only when they spend $500 MILLION in the off-season to attempt to BUY a championship. That is the difference. No team in baseball could have signed the TOP 3 FREE AGENTS in the game except one...yours. This is why we hate you.Smile

Payroll arguments are so tired.  We've heard them over and over, if you're team can't pay, don't play.  It's as simple as that, over 11 teams in the majors are above the 100 Million mark, 15 are above 97 Million, and it's not like anyone has been acitvely pushing for a cap.  Teams shouldn't go half way with this luxury tax garbage, either you have a cap or you don't.  It works great for the NFL, NHL, and NBA.  Granted, the NBA is a crap shoot as only a few teams have a legitimate shot but tons are close.

You're right, the Phillies did just when a championship. And I think it made some Phans soft! I couldn't believe how many people were saying not to trade away Drabek for Halladay! One championship and all of a sudden people cared about the future. They could have helped solidfy their rotation and won now. They still did a good job of improving the rotation by adding Lee. But it's not as though they gave up nothing for him.

It's a matter of perception. At the begining of the year Carrassco was the pitcher to come up for the Phillies. He strgguled and suddenly Drabek is the Golden Arm. And even still, so scouts say Knapp has more upside than Drabek!

You're everything for nothing is flawed in that when you got Lee he was the nothing! So essentially you just gave back nothing for nothing.

You have room to talk.....you have won a championship.   We have given up two cy-young winners and an all-star catcher.  What did you give up?  Prospects that may or may not make it.  If we didn't make a push this year, we defintely could have next year.  It is short-sightedness because Indians fans are sick and tired of losing.  The grady deal was great, but guess what he has been hurt this year and who knows when he will get healthy.  No one has ever even heard of the "prospects" they got from Boston, and as for the Phillies prospects, we have no choice but to bring them up because we don't have anyone left.  Grady might as well go ahead and have his surgery because this year is over.  Bring up the prospects so they can get major league experience and then we can slowly make our way back to the top with these guys.  Come on, reality is we gave up everything and got nothing in return.  TYPICAL!
