Red Sox acquire Victor Martinez from Cleveland

Striking late and dramatically, the Boston Red Sox bolstered their lineup by acquiring All-Star catcher Victor Martinez from Cleveland less than two hours before Friday's non-waivers trade deadline, CBSSports.com has learned.

The Indians will receive three young pitchers in exchange: Right-handers Juston Masterson and Bryan Price and left-hander Nick Hagadone.

The blockbuster deal comes following several days during which the Red Sox were hot on the trail of Martinez, San Diego slugger Adrian Gonzalez and Toronto ace Roy Halladay. Martinez, a three-time All-Star, was batting .284 with 15 homers and 67 RBI in 99 games for the Indians this season and arrives in Boston with the Red Sox having fallen into second place in the AL East, two games behind the New York Yankees.

The addition of Martinez is a huge boon for the Red Sox, who are concerned with the health of catcher Jason Varitek, 37, and who have watched slugger David Ortiz regress some this season. Martinez can catch, play first base and, of course, serve as designated hitter.

Masterson was 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 31 appearances with the Red Sox this season. Over the past two seasons, he has worked for manager Terry Francona both out of the bullpen and as a spot starter. Hagadone is a big, 6-5 lefty who was Boston's first-round sandwich pick (55th overall) in the 2007 draft. Price. 22, was a first-round sandwich pick (45th overall) in last year's draft.

The trio fits what Cleveland now is looking to accomplish, re-stocking its system with as many young arms as possible, after trading two Cy Young winners in the past two seasons -- Cliff Lee this week and CC Sabathia last July.

Red Sox acquire Victor Martinez from Cleveland

Am I the only Indians fan sick of reading how the other team got one of our all-stars "without giving up (insert prized prospect name here)"????  What is Shapiro doing?  I understand this season is a loss and building for the future but it seems we are settling for the the other teams second tier prospects in exchange for Cy Young winners and All-star position players.  Ever hear of quality over quantity?  The BAD news for the Indians is that they are getting back crap prospects.  The GOOD news is that they are getting a WHOLE BUNCH of them!

that's 11 guys on their roster contributing to the yankees this year. and almost 33% of payroll.

and guys like alfonso soriano came to out of the yankees system to acquire alex rodriguez.  don't let the facts get in the way of your argument.  (and mike lowell was a product of the yankees system. )

Im not an Indians fan and dont deal with it every day like you do but I think they did pretty good in the Cliff Lee deal.  Philly gave up there #3, #4, #7, and #9 top rated prospects.  I think that is pretty good.  I know Lee is the reigning Cy Yound winner and is having a good season this year, but the Indians really dont have anything good coming up through their system, and those that have come up the last few years they over valued (see Asdrubal Cabrera, Jhonny Perralta).

Wow, Cleveland just got OWNED in this deal.  2 players no one has ever heard of, and a middle-reliever who has shown his warts this year for an All-Star catcher/first-basemen.  I'm not a Sox fan, but that's a great move by Boston.  I guess Cleveland doesn't want to be competitive in the next 5 years.  Suckers.

You don't want to hear another word because the Yanks' payroll is still VASTLY higher than Boston's. And what a panicky move - acquiring a high quality hitter that we need. Oh my God! We've gone insane! Aaaaaaahhhhhhhh!

It's a lot to give up three young pitchers for Martinez, but at least they didn't give up Buchholz or Bard.  I also like the Casey Kotchman acquisition for Adam LaRoche.  Kotchman doesn't have the same power, but at least he puts the bat on the ball.  The rest of the lineup generates enough wind with all the swings and misses.

They have to be the worst trio of management I have ever seen.  Got a good "minor leaguer" and when I say "minor leaguer" I mean minor leaguer in LaPorta for C.C. last year.  Got a bunch of garbage for Cliff Lee this year.  And pretty much nothing for V-Mart.  Congratulations on ruining the next 10 years for Indians fans.  The sad part is they could have made a late push to win the central.  Terrible management and congratulations on being bottom dwellers for the years to come!

It is crazy to think with that lineup that they arent hitting.  Kinda scary to think about what that team would do if they start hitting and the starting pitching does what it should.  The Tigers now have 3 of the top 8 guys in ERA in the league.  I think other teams better start paying attention, the central race should be over pretty quick.

Just to give you some perspective from a Yankees fan...the reason we are gonna give you such a hard time about this is because of how poorly Red Sox fans handled the Mitchell Report and The A-rod thing...We all had suspiscions about Ortiz and now we have proof.  Just because a former Red Sox employee interviewed people who worked in the Yankee organization and then kept any revelant Red Sox player out of his report does not mean that Boston fans and reporters should have acted the way they did. We know that almost everyone was juicing...but seeing Boston struggle and now get hit with this is nice since we are tired of the high and mighty attitude held by fellow cheaters...V-Mart will ruin the team chemistry with so many people having to sit...they may miss the playoffs
