Red Sox acquire Victor Martinez from Cleveland

Striking late and dramatically, the Boston Red Sox bolstered their lineup by acquiring All-Star catcher Victor Martinez from Cleveland less than two hours before Friday's non-waivers trade deadline, CBSSports.com has learned.

The Indians will receive three young pitchers in exchange: Right-handers Juston Masterson and Bryan Price and left-hander Nick Hagadone.

The blockbuster deal comes following several days during which the Red Sox were hot on the trail of Martinez, San Diego slugger Adrian Gonzalez and Toronto ace Roy Halladay. Martinez, a three-time All-Star, was batting .284 with 15 homers and 67 RBI in 99 games for the Indians this season and arrives in Boston with the Red Sox having fallen into second place in the AL East, two games behind the New York Yankees.

The addition of Martinez is a huge boon for the Red Sox, who are concerned with the health of catcher Jason Varitek, 37, and who have watched slugger David Ortiz regress some this season. Martinez can catch, play first base and, of course, serve as designated hitter.

Masterson was 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 31 appearances with the Red Sox this season. Over the past two seasons, he has worked for manager Terry Francona both out of the bullpen and as a spot starter. Hagadone is a big, 6-5 lefty who was Boston's first-round sandwich pick (55th overall) in the 2007 draft. Price. 22, was a first-round sandwich pick (45th overall) in last year's draft.

The trio fits what Cleveland now is looking to accomplish, re-stocking its system with as many young arms as possible, after trading two Cy Young winners in the past two seasons -- Cliff Lee this week and CC Sabathia last July.

For Cleveland here is what you get if you don't know.  Masterson is a good long relief guy, not bad, not great.  He is very versatile as he has filled in very nicely on short notice to be a spot starter and capable of going 7 innings when needed to.  In Nick Hagadone you get a pretty good prospect, not sure where he ranks in the top 10 of Red Sox pitching prospects but has projected to be pretty good.

I'd say its a good trade for the Indians, sucks for the Red Sox if Martinez's numbers continue to decline

It will never happen, but baseball has to institute a cap and floor for player salaries. It's becoming ridiculous, you have the Yankees and Red Sox and everybody else. All the other teams including the Cubs and Dodgers have to watch their budgets. Why be a Pirate, Royal or Indian fan? There are more teams I could include as well. Once their young players contracts come due, it's adios amigos. Traded for 3 more young prospects and the cycle continues.

You apparently haven't followed the trades the Indians have made so far.    I am sure that the Indians will get players that no one has ever heard of (and most likely never will hear of).     Shapiro couldn't tell talent if it kicked him in the junk!

Yeah, the Red Sox gave Cashman a call.  He gave them a few dealer names from the Yankee farm system.

Hey Tigers fan, your team made a great move today.  With those three starters, Verlander, Jackson, and Washburn, that team could do some damage in the playoffs.  Now only if they could hit.

I really hope the Tribe gets something for him. I'm sick of Shapiro shipping our good players out of town for prospects. I've seen what prospects do in Cleveland...nothing. Our beloved faith and time in Jake Westbrook...yea, that got us far. He's doing great (sarcasm). Also, we might as well gave Cliff Lee away for a cheeseburger with what we got in return. At least get something for V-Mart guys. I was just wondering what i'm going to do with my Cliff Lee jersey, now my Martinez one is worthless too.

Please. The Red Sox aren't exactly in the Pirates payroll territory. The Red Sox spend plenty and their fans should not ever mention payroll. I would love to see Epstein or Cashman in any other front office. They would be total failures. When money is no object it's easy to trade for or sign big stars.

You are a little slow, Martinez only makes 5.9 million this year and next.  So payroll is not a factor in this deal, it actually is fiscally sensible.  Hope I didnt confuse you with the big words.
