Dodgers talking Gonzalez, Bell with San Diego

The Los Angeles Dodgers, who appear to have moved on from their talks with Toronto for ace Roy Halladay, are talking with the San Diego Padres about a potential blockbuster deal in which they would acquire both first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and closer Heath Bell, sources with knowledge of the Dodgers' plans have told CBSSports.com.

Gonzalez, a two-time All-Star, was hitting .252 with 28 home runs and 59 RBI in 103 games for the Padres this season. The Padres long have said they have not wanted to trade him but began listening to offers within the last several days.

San Diego conducted extensive talks with Boston regarding Gonzalez over the past 48 hours but those finally ended less than two hours before the trade deadline when the Red Sox acquired Victor Martinez.

If the Dodgers are able to pull this off, it would be the second closer they've acquired in two days -- they nabbed Baltimore's George Sherrill on Thursday. Also, presumably Gonzalez would replace James Loney at first base. There is no word yet on whom the Dodgers would send back in the deal.

Meantime, the Dodgers aren't the only Southern California team attempting to land Bell: The Los Angeles Angels also are engaged in serious discussions with the Padres while attempting to bolster their bullpen.

It seems all of us dodgers fans feel the same way, please don't trade loney, and I agree, if we could land Heath Bell that would be great, but I am almost certain if we trade for Adrian Gonzales, we will have to give up James Loney, unless we traded a package like Casey Blake, Scott Elbert, James Mcdonald, and maybe Xavier Paul, I don't see us getting them both without Loney being involved unfortunately, but I am pretty sure Loney can play third base if we can get Gonzo by trading Blake. But who knows, my best guess is nothing will even be done.

I agree.  Loney, Kemp, Either, and Martin are the heart of this team.  If anything, we need a 5th starter.  We don't need Halladay, but jjust a decent starter who can eat some innings...

Long time Dodger fan here......
I would make that trade in a heartbeat. James Loney is garbage, sure he can defend well but he has ZERO power and can't even hit better than .280 these days. What exactly does James Loney bring to the Dodgers? Absolutely nothing, that's what.

Im a big Dodger fan and love Loney, but Gonzalez would be great! Proven power hitter and just as good on D. Gonzalez would have a big rest of the year hitting between Manny and Eithier. And getting Bell, gives us dominance in the bullpen the last 3 innings. Dodgers should def do it. Giving up Loney would suck, but Gonzalez is way better than Loney...

Man...don't get rid of Loney. His #'s don't tell the whole story. A-Gone is a great player, but Loney is the real deal too, and they shouldn't mess with their chemistry if there isn't a problem.
