White Sox acquire Jake Peavy from Padres

In the craziest, most unexpected deal of the day, the Chicago White Sox have acquired right-hander Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres for a package of prospects, CBSSports.com has confirmed.

Yes, the same White Sox who were turned down by Peavy when a deal was first put into place back in May.

Peavy currently is on the disabled list recovering from a torn tendon in his right foot and has not pitched in six weeks. He is on target to begin throwing again in August. Assuming he comes back healthy, Peavy could become a huge difference-maker for the White Sox down the stretch as they battle the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins in the AL Central.

The move also gives the Sox a solid answer to Detroit's acquisition of Jarrod Washburn earlier in the day.

For Peavy, the Sox sent four young pitchers to the Padres: Left-handers Clayton Richard and Aaron Poreda and right-handers Adam Russell and Dexter Carter.

Richard was supposed to pitch for the Sox tonight against the New York Yankees.

White Sox acquire Jake Peavy from Padres

As a San Diegan who has watched Peavy throughout his career, I think you'll find this not a "very odd trade" at all. Peavy is one of the most intense high control pitchers in baseball. Whether or not he plays again this year, the White Sox and their fans will find him a huge benefit to their team.

Wow, that's your response. You, good sir, are an idiot. Please take your uneducated a$$ back to the rock you came under. Sox are 2.5 games back and in a small slump. Weren't they 6.5 games back and are already back in the hunt. Sox are in a hitting slump but that won't last long. The Sox have a better pitching coach that will make Peavy as good as Buehrle. Buehrle, Peavy, Danks, Floyd, and Contreras. C'mon, how can anyone not like that. Except for Twins and Tigers fan. One more thing, can't wait till the inconsistent Tigers offense pops back into action. Tigers pitching not the problem, still can't hit with any consistency. Sox, Twins, Tigers.

The Cubs are so lame.  They are 0 for their last 6 in playoff appearances.  I can't wait to see them get their asses handed to them again if they make the post-season.  I don't think the Sox are going to do much either this year, but the Cubs will choke as always.  Why would they upset the apple cart, and do anything different?

This trade is more about next year than this year. Sox will have a pretty impressive top 4 of Buehrle, Peavy, Danks & Floyd. Best part is that Beckham was not part of the deal. With a number of salaries coming off the books after this year (Thome, Dye, Contreras) to the tune of almost $40MM, Sox should be in good shape.

White Sox acquire Jake Peavy from Padres

Ya know I just heard Buster Olney say this is sorta a deal for the future and thats the way it looks. Peavy probably will be back late August but just think of your 2010 rotation Peavy, Buehrle, Floyd, Danks, and maybe Contrears. Thats loaded. I have always been in the Aaron Poreda fanclub, and richard has solid stuff but he's real hit or miss. You gotta give somethin to get somethin. Kenny Williams has brass balls .

Peavy is signed through 2012, with a ridiculous 2013 club option that the Sox wouldn't pick up most likely.  So, he is not really a rental but part of a solid rotation for the next few years with Buehrle, Danks and Floyd.
