White Sox acquire Jake Peavy from Padres

In the craziest, most unexpected deal of the day, the Chicago White Sox have acquired right-hander Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres for a package of prospects, CBSSports.com has confirmed.

Yes, the same White Sox who were turned down by Peavy when a deal was first put into place back in May.

Peavy currently is on the disabled list recovering from a torn tendon in his right foot and has not pitched in six weeks. He is on target to begin throwing again in August. Assuming he comes back healthy, Peavy could become a huge difference-maker for the White Sox down the stretch as they battle the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins in the AL Central.

The move also gives the Sox a solid answer to Detroit's acquisition of Jarrod Washburn earlier in the day.

For Peavy, the Sox sent four young pitchers to the Padres: Left-handers Clayton Richard and Aaron Poreda and right-handers Adam Russell and Dexter Carter.

Richard was supposed to pitch for the Sox tonight against the New York Yankees.

Poreda and Clayton are solid. The key to the deal for the Sox is that Peavy is
locked up for several years. Look at what the blue jays were asking for Halladay
and he's a free agent after next year.

The sox can now lock in a rotation of buehrle, peavy, floyd, and danks.
for the next few years. Not to mention the fact that poreda and clayton were
both lefties. I just don't see having 3 lefties in a rotation - let alone 4.

I think clayton is solid and Poreda is going to be good.

But the sox seem to be trading an awful lot of young arms recently.
Last year, they traded two of their top pitching prospects for swisher.
Now this year its 2 more prospects.

so let me get this straight...you trade you're #1 prospect entering the season (Poreda), a decent ML ready starter who was the #5 prospect in your system (Richard), your #13 ranked prospect with an absurd 143:32 strikeout to walk ratio in class a right now (Carter), and a solid arm whose putting up decent numbers in AAA (Russell).  For a guy who probably won't return next season and might not be able to pitch this season and even if he does, you have to question his effectiveness, especially in the much more offensive AL.  It just doesn't seem to make sense to make a trade like this where you lose a solid quartet of minor league talent for a pitcher who might never pitch for your team.

Can't be a rental - he is under contract for 4 more years.

How is it a rental when he is signed through 2013?

Disabled List?

I thought you couldn't make trades when players were on the DL?? Wasn't that why NO ONE was talking about Bedard or Peavy even being moved?

And what, now Peavy accepts the trade the 2nd time around?

HAHA, I love all the bitter Cubs fans chirping away on this board. What's the matter, still pissed that your GM couldn't pull the trigger? You should be upset, KW is a great GM and continues his under-the-radar maneuvers.

I love this trade for the White Sox, regardless of this year's performance for Peavy. If he comes back this season, it's a bonus. But now look at next year, Mark Buehrle, Jake Peavy, John Danks, Gavin Floyd. Not bad.

Poreda is probably the best of the four that SD is getting. Great fastball, but needs an offspeed pitch. Richard has talent and I think he will be a decent 3rd-4th starter, especially in the NL. I must admit I don't know all that much about Russell and Carter. Russell was up in the bigs earlier this year and was nothing special. I think Carter has potential, but again, nothing special.

Big trade for the Sox...should make it interesting assuming the Sox are still in the hunt in by the time Peavy gets back.  The Padres can thank the Tigers for this deal i think.

Im not hating at all but i dont think this was a good trade...thats 4 arms for an injured guy.  Seems like too much.

Don't see how this is bad even if he doesn't pitch this year.  The Sox have control over him I believe through 2013.  So I don't see a down side to this...well besides him possibly not pitching this year.

Its not a rental, Peavy is under contract thru 2012, with a club option for 2013.  If he comes back healthy this year, it could make a huge difference down the stretch and Kenny Williams looks like a genius.  If not, they still have him for the future.
