Marmol in, Gregg out as Cubs closer

Posted on: August 18, 2009 8:53 pm

Out of patience following another jarring, walk-off loss Monday night to start a crucial West Coast trip, Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella has demoted Kevin Gregg from the closer's role. Carlos Marmol will replace him.

"He pitched in the set-up role last year and this year, he has some experience closing, it's a natural progression," Piniella said of Marmol, who is 2-2 with a 3.51 ERA and four saves this season.

As for Gregg, Monday's was his sixth blown save this season in 29 opportunities. Three of those, however, have occurred this month. In eight August outings, Gregg has three blown saves and an 11.25 ERA.

"Look, we needed to try a different approach," Piniella said. "We've been very patient, if you want to use that word. We've lost some tough, tough ballgames. Marmol deserves an opportunity and we're going to give him that chance."

Marmol in, Gregg out as Cubs closer

Lou screwed this one up from the get go!  Carlos should have been the closer to start the year off, but Gregg has a great spring, gets annointed closer and Marmol gets his confidence shaken.  As a pitcher, that is the worst thing that can happen!  Lose your confidence and lose all you have!
I am a supporter of Marmol, the kid is unhittable when he is over the plate and in the strike zone, he has some of the nastiest stuff in the bigs - and he should have been closing to start the year!  He goes to play in the WSOB and Gregg stays with the Cubs - Lou gives Gregg the benefit of the doubt for being around all spring and sets the Cubbies back another year!

In order to compete, the Cubs need to revamp the starting rotation.  They have less flexability in the field with some contracts right now.  I was screaming for Zambrano to go at the start of the year and now I feel he has little to no trade value - not to mention his mouth keeps on going, and for what?  Lilly and Wells are the rocks -  the rest needs to be filled in - someway --- somehow!

Marmol in, Gregg out as Cubs closer

Gregg has 6 blown saves as the everyday closer....Marmol ALREADY has 4 blown saves...in 8 opportunities....Can we call for his head after racking up 2 more??  Why not give Guzman a chance?  although last night did not help that chance any.....
Marmol is averaging almost a walk an inning...luckily strikeouts also come at that rate too...

Gregg or Marmol. Like choosing between being punched in the mouth or kicked in the crotch.

It is so obvious! What the Cubs need is a GM that is breathing!!! Jim Hendry is the pits. Dump him, the entire Front Office, and just maybe things will improve. Poor Lou is handed a pile of dog crap is is told to build a winner. No way! The only winners are the rest of the Division.

If anyone is paying attention, Kerry Wood isn't having a very good year, either. He was "our guy," and certainly that means something, but we never got through a ninth inning without a heart attack last year either. It's really not that different.

He's learning, I'll grant you, but Cub fans, you are fools if you give up on Marmol.  He has Mariano Rivera quality stuff. I'm a Reds fan, and I would take him for our closer tomorrow.

ATTENTION all major league hitters make MARMOL pitch strikes, the man has nasty stuff but i almost guarantee if you go up to the plate and just take every pitch about 9 times out of 10 you will walk, this guy name should be the "wild thing" but in a bad way and cubbies lets start the chant "101 bottles of beer on the wall, 101 bottles of beer" but hopefully we can sing that for the next 101 years then it will be 202 bottles of beer on the wall-you get the picture but as the great Marty brennaman says i hope they lose for the next 100 years with that pay roll.

I agree totally.  The Cubs only got Gregg to save cash on Wood thinking that Marmol would eventually be their closer.  Unfortunately, Mamol is a head case and will walk in runs and blow saves just as fast as Gregg did by giving up home runs.  The Cubs will always suck until they get decent late relief and a closer.

Its about time.....im tired of watching Gregg blow every chance he has.  Should have kept Kerry Wood.  Hopefully this coming offseason we can get a true closer.
