Marmol in, Gregg out as Cubs closer

Out of patience following another jarring, walk-off loss Monday night to start a crucial West Coast trip, Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella has demoted Kevin Gregg from the closer's role. Carlos Marmol will replace him.

"He pitched in the set-up role last year and this year, he has some experience closing, it's a natural progression," Piniella said of Marmol, who is 2-2 with a 3.51 ERA and four saves this season.

As for Gregg, Monday's was his sixth blown save this season in 29 opportunities. Three of those, however, have occurred this month. In eight August outings, Gregg has three blown saves and an 11.25 ERA.

"Look, we needed to try a different approach," Piniella said. "We've been very patient, if you want to use that word. We've lost some tough, tough ballgames. Marmol deserves an opportunity and we're going to give him that chance."

Marmol in, Gregg out as Cubs closer

I wonder if the decision to let Kerry Wood walk away still looks like a god thing.   He may not be the pitcher he was 10 years ago, but he doesn't give up.  Now we get to lose games by walking in the winning run versus gving up the game winning home run.

HBP and walks instead of homers.  Why not just bring up a young arm and see what they can do.  The season is over, so lets see what we got down on the farm.

How much better is he? He is a close that gives the manager a heart attack. The key to the closer's role is to get the first man out. If he's walking the first hitter all the time he's going to struggle. Just last week he got booed by 41,000 at Wrigley for walking 3 guys and hitting another. He's better than Gregg because Gregg gives up WAY too many homers. I'd rather see Guzman or even Grabow close games because of Marmol's struggles this year. Good luck Carlos, try not to walk the leadoff man.

new closer same result...only difference is the blown saves will come via walks and wild pitches...if only the Cubbies had a legit closer..

Different pitcher same result...The only difference is the runs will come via walks or wild pitches...If only the Cubs had a legit closer, they porbably would be leading the division...
