I hate to report tough news out of Michigan tonight: Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell has been diagnosed with an incurable tumor in the area of the bile duct. Not only is Harwell, 91, one of the best broadcasters of all time, a treasured voice for the ages, he's also one of the sweetest men you'll ever meet. May he be surrounded by love and strengthened by his fervent faith as he enters this difficult next chapter of his life.

That just sucks.  Detroit and all of baseball will be losing one more announcing legend--after him only Vin Scully is left from the Golden Mike era.

All thoughts, prayers, and well wishes with Ernie's family and the Tigers organization.

Ernie Harwell has incurable cancer

Growing up I listened to the radio broadcasts of baseball games often.  Back then it was more common that baseball games were not on TV, and of course any late night games were off limits for a young kid to be watching.  I'd sneak my transistor radio under my pillow and listen to Harwell and Carey and inevitably fall asleep, running another 9 volt into oblivion.

I still get chills when I hear Ernie broadcast as a guest for an inning.  His silky voice and vast knowledge of the game, the players, and his ability to captivate an audience was a complete joy to have been a part of.

In my mind, there are three broadcasters that always stand out and that I can identify as soon as I hear their voices.  Those greats would be the late Jack Buck, the ' Vin Scully, and of course Detroit's own Ernie Harwell.

God Bless you Ernie, fight on, and I hope to see you at the park again!

I use to sit under the tree in the front yard with my Grandpa and listen to TIIIIIGER BAASEBAAAALLL! Ernie always made me smile and think of my Grandpa after he passed away. Thanks Mr. Harwell! May you enjoy the rest of your days in peace and love as you have brought much to so many!

Ernie Harwell has incurable cancer

Man I listened to him all my life when I lived up near detroit.  summers playing ball in the side yard listening to enrie describe a tigers game was like watching the mona lisa being painted.  I heard him a couple of years ago do some quest announcing and he just blew away the current Play by play and color commentators.  he is awesome with his knowledge of the past and present.  Man I dont know what to say.

If Ernie reads these things I would just like to say thanks for the memories.  You are the best!
