Memo to: Cardinals new hitting coach.
From: Friendly neighborhood scribe.
Re.: First time a slumping St. Louis hitter comes looking for help, "I'm not here to talk about the past" is not the answer he's going to be looking for.
Just saying.

St. Louis hires Mark McGwire as hitting coachThe past is exactly what he is there to talk about! 583 home runs, 1400+ Runs Batted In. I am happy to see him on the Cardinal staff and expect he will make a positive impact on the players. -The right way.
Enough with dredging out what he may have done, or what he actually did to tarnish his reputation. Reporters love to keep digging at this, but fail to point out, McGuire did not break any rules of the game when he did this. There were no bans for use until 2003. The supplements he used were also not banned. At the time he acknowledged their use as they assisted in muscle recovery. They were available over the counter at GNC. The problem here is not what he did. The problem here is now how he did it. The problem here is that many reporters want to expose people in all professions for being frauds when they can find something to write about. It sells papers and airtime. The connotation of support would likely blackball a reporter as a "right wing sympathizer", and reporting is not about being right, in more ways than one. I am glad the policy is now in force. I support its enforcement due to the long term effects this stuff can have on health. I do not resent how McGuire achieved his success though. I don't believe this "era" should be noted with an asterisk unless a player is known to break league rules. Since their were no rules broken, during this time through the end of 2002, the witch hunt should be done. Pleading the 5th, was to avoid a implicit guilty plea. -Of which he was not. The policy is now in force. Focus on that. My time is wasted with reading about "historical irrelevance" with archived tests that have nothing to do with breaking rules. |

St. Louis hires Mark McGwire as hitting coachNot sure why everyone is hating on McGwire today. He and Sosa brought baseball back to America in 1998, but even the St. Louis fans have forgotten. Cheers to TLR for a brave decision.
