Randy Johnson expected to retire tonight

Randy Johnson has scheduled a conference call for later today, at which time the five-time Cy Young award winner is expected to announce his retirement.

The call comes on the eve of Wednesday's Hall of Fame voting results, a fitting time being that five years from now, it will be Johnson who almost certainly will be inducted into Cooperstown.

Johnson, 46, won his 300th game last summer pitching for the San Francisco Giants, becoming just the 24th pitcher in history to reach that level. That, though, turned into the highlight of his season. Not long after, he suffered a tear in his rotator cuff, missed the next several weeks and finished 8-6 with a 4.88 ERA for the Giants.

Only Roger Clemens (six) won more Cy Young awards than Johnson, who helped pitch the Arizona Diamondbacks to the 2001 World Series title in a memorable triumph over the Yankees. Johnson and Curt Schilling were co-MVPs during that series, during which one of the most memorable moments came when Johnson entered Game 7 in relief in the eighth inning and earned the win after being the winning pitcher in Game 6 the night before.

Over 22 seasons with Montreal, Seattle, Houston, Arizona, the Yankees and the Giants, Johnson went 303-166. His 4,875 strikeouts rank second all-time to Nolan Ryan (5,714). He also pitched 37 shutouts.

I think that the Mariners edge out Arizona, that's where he learned to pitch.  He learned to control his power and dominate hitters while he was there.  They were also his most intiminating days.  You never knew when that 100 mile an hour fast ball was coming at your head.

If not the Mariners, then Arizona.  The perfect game and the 3-0 perfomance in the World Series againts the Yankees.  The final 3 pitches in his perfect game against the Rockies is one of the most lasting baseball memories I have of sports.  That and Jr rounding 3rd, M's fans know what I'm talking about.

Randy Johnson expected to retire tonight

Randy Johnson was a truly remarkable pitcher for a number of reasons.  Perhaps most overlooked is the way he learned to control his pitches after bouts of wildness early in his career.  He walked 120+ batters each year 1990-92, leading the league in walks all three years.  After walking 99 batters (and striking out 308) in 1993, he never approached 100 walks again.  In 2001, at the age of 37, he struck out 300 more batters than he walked (372-71).

My favorite memory of Randy Johnson came in the 1995 AL Division Series against the Yankees.  As an Orioles fan with no love lost for the Yanks, I could almost feel the energy from the Kingdome as Johnson jogged in from the bullpen with "Welcome to the Jungle" playing on the PA system.  He proceeded to pitch three innings of relief and help lock up the series for the Mariners.

The body of work he turned in over the past 22 years leaves no doubt in my mind that he will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

Randy Johnson expected to retire tonight

Kudos to Randy Johnson for a great Hall of Fame career.  Watched him come up and pitch against the Royals in his early Mariners days.  My friends and I thought that if he ever could get contol of his pitches he would be one awesome lefty.  Well he finally did and the rest was baseball history.  Hate to see him retire but 22 years, 4500+ K's and 303 wins is enough for one career.  Good luck to him in the future.
