Rangers acquire Cliff Lee from Seattle

The Cliff Lee talks went from whirlwind to nuts on Friday, with a deal with the Yankees moving from nearly done to essentially falling apart by Friday afternoon, leaving the door open for the Texas Rangers to swoop in and acquire Lee for a package of prospects centered around first baseman Justin Smoak, according to sources.

The Rangers will receive Lee and reliever Mark Lowe in exchange for Smoak, minor-league second baseman Matt Lawson and two minor-league right-handed pitchers, Josh Lueke and Blake Bevin.

Seattle also will send cash to Texas, a sum said by one source to be "in excess of $2 million", to cover part of the $4.5 million owed Lee through the rest of 2010.

The Rangers, according to one club official, were feverishly working much of the day toward striking a deal to acquire Seattle's ace left-hander, the prize pitcher on the trade market this July. The offensively challenged Mariners were looking for good, young hitters, and the Texas farm system is stocked.

The news, expected to be formally announced later Friday, caps a wild day of rumors, talks and speculation.

With Lee scheduled to pitch against the Yankees on Friday evening, the day started with New York moving into position to strike quickly to bring Lee to the Bronx, according to sources. The Yankees were deep in discussions Friday morning to acquire Lee for a package centered around catching prospect Jesus Montero and minor-league second baseman David Adams.

When those talks broke down -- or, more likely, causing those talks to break down -- the Rangers were exceptionally aggressive. Texas was working with the benefit of one of the game's most well-stocked farm systems, and the acquisition of Lee makes first-place Rangers strong favorites to win their first AL West crown since 1999.

The Rangers have called a 5 p.m. CDT press conference to announce the deal.

As a die-hard, Yankee fan, i'm glad Lee went to Texas. The Rangers haven't had an Ace since the Great, Nolan Ryan. plus it makes the Rangers revelant for the first time in 11 years. the Rangers farm system are better than ours. now this is when a dose of reality falls in. he'll be a free agent and the only teams seems to be well financed are the Yankees, Boswax, and Mets to bid for Lee. good luck Rangers.

In other fantasy news, in a related story the Rangers have recalled Chris Davis from AAA. For points leagues his K's will be a killer, but in roto his power will help. He's been crushing the ball at AAA and should be a very useful and sneaky pickup. Yahoo has yet to show the news on Davis' profile, but rotoworld has his callup announced. He's not starting tonight, but he is expected to be the everyday 1B for the rest of the year. Batting anywhere from 5th to 8th in that stacked lineup should be very productive if he has indeed recaptured his swing in AAA.

Smoak has all of 30 games against major league pitching. I have no idea what you are talking about, his DEFENSE is his true weakness. He has a super sweet swing and if the M's can keep him, they will end up laughing at how they gave up 16 Cliff Lee starts for Smoak and Beavens. Smoak's average is a little low right now, but PLEASE be real, you have to give these young guys some time.

Just saying.... no hard feelings I hope.

So does Lee still start tonight Vs the Yankees?  If so, are they gonna be pissed and light him up?

Hold off on the suicide attempt. I am a Rangers fan, so losing Smoak for this season is not a heart-breaker, but I guarntee you he will be tops in hitting by his third year. He is a rookie, but he has a great eye for the ball. Plus you get two highly rated prospects in Beavan and Lawson. Talk around here is that Lawson could be in the majors if Kinsler wasn't on the roster, and Beavan has lived up to his hype, so far in the minors.

Why?  Please explain.  Why doesn't MLB need Lee in NY.?  How can you be a Yankees fan & make that statement?

you won't be saying that in 2 years, I PROMISE you that.

It is the best looking .200 you'll ever lay eyes on Thor. You WILL love him, i hate like hell to see him go, especially sine Lee WAS NOT going to re-sign with the Mariners and Lee won't re-sign with the Rangers... That being said I think he (Lee) is a Yankee hater, so maybe he won't go there and that's good...

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Major League Baseball running the Rangers right now?  Nice move Bud Selig!
