Rangers acquire Cliff Lee from Seattle

The Cliff Lee talks went from whirlwind to nuts on Friday, with a deal with the Yankees moving from nearly done to essentially falling apart by Friday afternoon, leaving the door open for the Texas Rangers to swoop in and acquire Lee for a package of prospects centered around first baseman Justin Smoak, according to sources.

The Rangers will receive Lee and reliever Mark Lowe in exchange for Smoak, minor-league second baseman Matt Lawson and two minor-league right-handed pitchers, Josh Lueke and Blake Bevin.

Seattle also will send cash to Texas, a sum said by one source to be "in excess of $2 million", to cover part of the $4.5 million owed Lee through the rest of 2010.

The Rangers, according to one club official, were feverishly working much of the day toward striking a deal to acquire Seattle's ace left-hander, the prize pitcher on the trade market this July. The offensively challenged Mariners were looking for good, young hitters, and the Texas farm system is stocked.

The news, expected to be formally announced later Friday, caps a wild day of rumors, talks and speculation.

With Lee scheduled to pitch against the Yankees on Friday evening, the day started with New York moving into position to strike quickly to bring Lee to the Bronx, according to sources. The Yankees were deep in discussions Friday morning to acquire Lee for a package centered around catching prospect Jesus Montero and minor-league second baseman David Adams.

When those talks broke down -- or, more likely, causing those talks to break down -- the Rangers were exceptionally aggressive. Texas was working with the benefit of one of the game's most well-stocked farm systems, and the acquisition of Lee makes first-place Rangers strong favorites to win their first AL West crown since 1999.

The Rangers have called a 5 p.m. CDT press conference to announce the deal.

I'm not a Yankee fan, but I couldn't agree more with you.
That deal would have been tough to stomach....

I thought Clifford Lee had a torn labrum. I guess it was the other Clifford Lee. The Rangers....what a joke! I made a bet with a friend in Texas that the Rangers will collapse again. If they prove true to my words I get go on vacation to Europe...compliments of my friend. And if the Rangers actually manage to win the division then I will foot the bill for the vacation. It's win-win for me because I always had a crush on his sister. now i'm hoping that another volcano eruption won't ruin our vacation plan this time.

The Mariners should change their name to the Washington Generals, Because now they are just playing dummy to the real teams in MLB. You can't win with Smoak and mirrors.

Use a butter knife pal.....HE's A ROOOOOKIE!!!  Ever heard of DEVEOPLING talent????  In 3 years this kid could be hitting 30 bombs and driving in 100+  You never know.  Chill out man. Typical Mariner fan.....I was at the game last night and it amazes me how dumb most Mariner fans are.........Keep talking about the GOOD OLD DAYS.....116 wins....BLAH BLAH BLAH......did those 116 wins get Seattle a WS Title......HELL NO.  It takes time to build something man, and we aint the sip yer coffee, enjoy the 93 degree summer day and relax.......2010 is history and Jack Z  knows what he is doing.  And BTW.....Cliff Lee is 32 years old and probably has 3 years at best before his career is over. Smoak could be around for 10 years.......Works for me.

This is a no-brainer, Texas gets him for a few months but we win th eworld series anyway and then get him in pinstripes next year.
I guess it is nice to be confident.  Not sure why Yankee fans believe it is set in stone they will win the World Series and then sign Lee in the off-season.

I don't know one educated Yankee fan who was excited about Lee coming here. In fact most were pissed because having a starting rotation like that would be unfair and ridiculous, plus we want to see our homegrown guys stick around especially Hughes as a starter not in the bullpen. Congrats to the Rangers, we will see you in the ALCS in the Bronx!

Best Headline In Over A Month!!!!

I have to say, I am relieved that Lee did not go to the Yankees....He will definately make Texas a strong contender for the West; that is not what makes this the best headline in over a month...I am just happy to see something other than LeBrongate hogging up all the air time in sports.  OK, the deal is done...The 7 year NBA dude with nothing to show for all his supposed talents has been signed, lets get on with the rest of our sports lives....

Happy to have Lee, but I'm more excited to see over hyped Smoak gone. Now the Rangers can bring Davis back to Arlington, he is just a few month older than Smoak and I think that he has a bigger up side. He got to the majors with hard work not because he was a big dollar 1st round draft choice. Davis will have a better career.

I was surprised to see Lowe in the deal since he is on the DL and out for the season.  I was bummed at first but then I remembered how much time he has missed with injuries.  He has not been nearly as effective since he cannot throw 101 anymore.

I enjoyed watching Lee while he was here, but since the season went south the trade was inevitable.  So long and good luck to Lee and Lowe.  Welcome Smoak.  Looking forward to many smoaked home-runs.

Smoak may seem like the centerpiece to this deal but ultimately it will be Blake Beavin, a 6'7", 250 pound Right hander with a mid to high 90's fastball.  He's at AAA now and is 10-5 with 12 walks and about 70 K's.  He's the real deal and if Seattle gets him as part of this deal it's a good deal for Seattle's future.

I'm a Ranger's fan and like getting Lee for the rest of 2010, but losing Beavin is going to haunt us down the road.
