Dodgers acquire Podsednik, eye pitching help

The Dodgers made a trade Wednesday, but it wasn't one to strengthen their rotation and solve their dilemma of who's going to start Saturday against San Francisco.

Instead, they struck for an outfielder, acquiring veteran Scott Podsednik from Kansas City for a couple of minor-league prospects while continuing their search for a starting pitcher.

As for whether the Dodgers will be able to add a starter by Saturday's trade deadline -- they've inquired about Houston's Roy Oswalt and the Cubs' Ted Lilly, among others -- general manager Ned Colletti said it's still too early to know.

"Tough to tell," Colletti said early Wednesday evening. "You take it as it comes. This deal [Podsednik] came about. You don't have to put it in order. You get them done when you can."

Looking to beef up their versatility and add depth with Manny Ramirez disabled with a strained calf, the Dodgers sent two minor leaguers -- Triple-A catcher Lucas May and Double-A right-hander Elisaul Pimentel -- to the Royals for Podsedik. No money exchanged hands -- the Dodgers will pay the roughly $600,000 owed to Podsednik for the remainder of the year. His contract includes a $2 million club option for 2011 or a $100,000 buyout.

It's not a blockbuster deal, but with Ramirez on the DL for a third time this season and with the Dodgers running third in the NL West, the acquisition of Podsednik at least gives manager Joe Torre another option. Especially with another outfielder, Reed Johnson, also on the disabled list with a back injury and not expected to return for at least three or four more weeks.

"He brings a lot of different things to the club," Colletti said. "He's a good hitter -- his average is over .300 -- he drives in a lot of runs for hitting in a high spot in the order, he has speed, he can add a lot of different dimensions to the club.

"That he played on a World Series winner in Chicago a few years ago is also a plus."

In 94 games for Kansas City this season, Podsednik hit .310 and stole 30 bases. He also posted a .352 on-base percentage.

The Dodgers hope Podsednik arrives in San Diego in time for Thursday's 3:35 p.m. PDT start. He'll bring a 15-game hitting streak with him.

Meantime, the Dodgers right now are going with "to be determined" as the starter opposite San Francisco's Barry Zito on Saturday. Likely, it will be right-hander John Ely, who was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on July.

Unless, of course, Colletti pulls a rabbit out of his cap for the Dodgers on the trade market.

Couldn't disagree more about Matg Kemp. He did a great job laying off of it last year, but he's slumped this year. He's an amazing talent, trading him would be foolish.

As far as the problems with Coletti, that whole thing was blown out of proportion. Kemp's dumbass agent Dave Stewart did a nice job of fueling the fire when that whole thing went down, but it was no big deal.

And if you can get ANY team to take Manny right now then you're the best GM in the history of professional sports.

Great pick-up by Colletti.  Now he can trade KEMP for a top pitcher and put PODSEDNIK in center field.  Or if he can get some AL team to take on Manny as a DH, he can get a middle-level pitcher from the AL.    Colletti and Kemp have had their problems.  Kemp looks clueless at the plate on down and out pitch, over and over again.  He doesn't change his approach or his stance.  Time to go!

And I agree about batting Pods second-you don't move Raffi's place in the order when he's as hot as he is. Plus think of the possibilities-Raffi gets on bas and they play hit and run, then there's two on nobody out to begin every game-I like the thought that they can scrap for runs now and don't have to rely on the HR.

Prince Fielder is not the answer. He's a good power hitter but brings nothing else. James Loney doesn't hit for power, but he's one of the better hitters in the league and a gold glove caliber forst baseman.
The Dodgers have the bats, they're just slumping right now-and have still been winning games because the starting pitching has rounded into form. But you can never have enough pitching, and since Oswalt is off the table I would like to see them go after Ted Lilly-not a deal breaker, but an innings eating reliable guy with experience.

You want to move one of the hottest bats in baseball to another spot in the lineup? He's the only one producing right now. Pods can bat second like Martin did when he used to hit and steal bases.

The Dodgers still need a #5 starter, but 1-4 has been terrific for the last 3 weeks.  What they need is for Ethier, Kemp, Blake and Martin to get their heads out of their rears and start hitting like they're capable of.
And headcase Manny to quit being so soft and get back in the lineup.

Torre would be nuts to take Furcal out of the top spot, he is heart and sould of the offense when he bats leadoff.

Stacked line up? What team are you talking about? The Dodgers offense is terrible.

And now playing first place SD. Only scored 2 runs yesterday and WON the game. This looks like a team that needs hitting, not pitching
