Rangers finally acquire Jorge Cantu from Marlins

Posted on: July 29, 2010 6:09 pm

After several days of talking, the Rangers finally have acquired slugger Jorge Cantu from the Marlins, has learned.

Looking for one more powerful bat to add to an already potent lineup, the Rangers will slide Cantu into the first base slot, where Chris Davis has been struggling with the bat. Described by one scout as "the least-known 100 RBI guy in the game"), Cantu was hitting .259 with 10 homers and 54 RBI in 96 games for the Marlins this season.

He's due roughly $2.1 million for the rest of 2010, and he is the third significant piece the first-place Rangers have added to what is increasingly looking like a team that is ready to win not just the AL West but, possibly, the AL pennant and beyond. Cantu's arrival follows that of ace Cliff Lee and catcher Bengie Molina.

Among other holdups in this deal, the Rangers and Marlins had to get approval from the Commissioner's Office because of the money owed Cantu. The Marlins will receive two Double-A pitching prospects, Evan Reed and Omar Poveda, according to sources.

The Rangers' 7 1/2-game lead over Oakland in the AL West heading into Thursday's games was the largest in the majors.

Florida, meanwhile, was fourth in the NL East, 8 1/2 games behind division leader Atlanta. The Marlins recently lost Chris Coghlan to the disabled list when he injured a knee while delivering a pie to the face of teammate Wes Helms while celebrating a last-inning victory.

Florida also recently recalled rookie Logan Morrison to play left field, the chain-reaction of which was going to send Coghlan and Helms to third base to replace Cantu after a deal.

Just what is the Rangers are thinking? I do not believe they fear an el foldo for the rest of the season because the club just seems to have that confidence to bounce back after a tough loss or two. Is it possible they are looking to assemble a playoff roster? Something more immediate?... Like owning the best record in the American League come playoff time. Man I hope Nolan Ryan emerges as part owner of the Rangers after all the dust settles. This club has never had it so together in its entire existence.

It looks like the Rangers are going for it

I have to give credit to the Texas Rangers management for their aggressiveness this trading season. Adding Cliff Lee was a brilliant move and Jorge Cantu is a nice fit as well.

The Los Angeles Angels are probably going to have trouble catching the Rangers due to all their injuries although the Dan Haren trade will pay off for years to come.

The Oakland Athletics meanwhile don't seem primed to do much if you believe GM Billy Beane who has said the A's won't be active in trades at the deadline.

It's probably not a great idea to believe anything a GM says in July but if the A's do stand pat it's hard to see how they'll catch the Rangers.

The less said about the Seattle Mariners the better as they're probably just praying for the season to end at this point.

All signs point to the Rangers winning the A.L. West and with the moves they're making they could make some noise in the playoffs this year.

Nice pickup.  He should absolutely rake in Texas in that park in the summer.

Gotta love what the Rangers are doing.  I'm still not giving up on Davis, but I guess you need to hedge your bets.  Hopefully it's a platoon with Davis against righties and Cantu against lefties.  I guess Cantu can play 2nd and 3rd, but I don't think fielding is one of his strengths.  The Rangers defense has been outstanding this year (for the most part).
It's great to get another right handed batter.  The Rangers have been using the left-handed Murphy as a pinch hitter against lefties because he was really the only option.  Hopefully Cantu platoons at 1B and becomes the main pinch hitter off the bench.  I would think they would play Blanco and Arias at 2B while Kinsler is on the shelf.
Also, someone has to be sent down.  Is Moreland up for just one game, then back to AAA?
