Busy Yankees acquire Cleveland's Kearns

The Yankees are moving quickly toward filling in the cracks in their roster: They acquired outfielder Austin Kearns from Cleveland within hours after reaching an agreement with Houston to bring Lance Berkman aboard.

The Yankees will send Cleveland a player to be named later or cash to complete the deal.

Kearns, 30, was hitting .272 with eight homers and 42 RBI in 84 games for the Indians this season and adds depth to the Yankees' stable of outfielders.

Kearns gives manager Joe Girardi another option in left field, where Curtis Granderson has struggled badly against left-handed pitching this season. Granderson, into Friday, was hitting just .214 against lefties with a .286 slugging percentage.

Kearns, meantime, is hitting .250 against lefties this year.

"A corner outfielder that gives us depth and experience," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters in Tampa, where New York was playing the Rays, on Friday night. "A right-handed bat that has power. We can use him a lot of different ways. It will give me a chance to rest our left-handed guys."

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira was thrilled to hear that both Kearns and Houston's Lance Berkman soon will be in the clubhouse as reinforcements for the stretch drive.

"That's great," Teixeira told reporters. "Two quality guys. I know both of them real well. They're both great guys. It's going to be good for the clubhouse."

Kearns will wilt in the spotlight.  He is a guy who is best left in a small market playing a small role. But I wish him the best.

I'm thinking the same thing - a set up guy for the bullpen would solidify the pitching staff.  There's an old rule in baseball that goes, you can never have too much pitching.     And nowadays with the extra long seasons, this rule is more critical than ever.   Glad to see the Yanks make these moves but hope for just a little more. Hopefully, a new prospect may emerge from the minor league teams.  There's where the future lies and let's hope for continued success.

Well perhaps an upgrade over Thames, but Thames has proven himself as clutch in desperate situations.

We still need to fill the holes in the bullpen.

Not too sure why the Yanks added another OF, unless they plan to trade one of them by tomorrow's deadine in return for some quality starting/relief pitching or a backup infielder.

Are you kidding? Kearns is a huge upgrade over Thames in the outfield. He's a decent hitter that can actually hit right handed pitching. The Yanks have needed a better 4th outfielder all yr. and now they finally have one.

Nice little move in acquiring Kearns from the Indians. He'll provide a solid bench bat, and a good player to spell  Granderson, Gardner and Swish in the outfield, and even Berkman at DH from day to day while providing some productive AB.
The best part for the Yankees is that they didn't have to pay a ridiculous price tag.

For those in fantasy leagues though, Kearns is now completely droppable- if for some reason you still owned him.

Um..........you forgot the huge gap in the starting rotation.  I'm sure the Yankees are working on their annual pillaging (of bad teams looking to dump for next to nothing). ALL their shortcomings must be checked off.  One thing is for certain is they definately can't hit lefties.  GO ANYONE BUT THE YANKEES.
