Cards land Westbrook & Padres Ludwick in 3 way

Posted on: July 31, 2010 1:06 pm

Two National League contenders strengthened themselves impressively for the stretch run with one bold three-way trade on Saturday, with St. Louis acquiring right-handed pitcher Jake Westbrook from Cleveland, San Diego landing hard-hitting outfielder Ryan Ludwick from St. Louis and the Indians receiving a couple of prospects from the Padres, including Double-A pitcher Corey Kluber, multiple sources have told CBSSports.com.

While Cleveland rebuilds, the Cardinals and Padres, two clubs with serious playoff aspirations, landed exactly what they needed.

In Westbrook, the Cardinals gain a solid starter who adds significant depth to a rotation that will nevertheless continue to live and die with co-aces Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright.

A veteran right-hander who missed most of 2008 and 2009 following Tommy John ligament replacement surgery, Westbrook bounced back to make the opening day start for Cleveland in 2010 and has gone 6-7 with
a 4.65 ERA over 21 starts.

The Cardinals have been searching for a starter because things have been in flux in the rotation after Carpenter and Wainwright. Rookie Jaime Garcia has been sensational, but there is concern over his workload. Kyle Lohse has been out for much of the season due to a forearm injury. And Brad Penny has battled various nagging injuries.

Lohse has made an injury-rehabilitation start and the Cardinals hope he will return to the rotation in a few weeks.

"There is a better expectation [that he'll be good]," Cards manager Tony La Russa told reporters recently in St. Louis. "He's feeling really normal, and he says he likes the way he's responding."

In Ludwick, the surprising Padres got what they have been searching for: An outfielder who will help add pop to a sluggish offense. Ludwick is hitting .281 with 11 homers and 43 RBI for the Cardinals this year, and his defense is very underrated. In that department, he fits perfectly into a Padres team that is strong with the gloves and whose pitching staff leads the majors in ERA.

The Padres are sending Kluber to the Indians and minor-league right-hander Nick Greenwood to the Cardinals.

Cards land Westbrook & Padres Ludwick in 3 way

Lets put it this way, i am not a Cards fan, but this was a horrible trade for them.  They are already having problems scoring runs this season and they trade a guy who averages 105 RBI's a season and is a very underrated player for a 4th starter.  A guy who might not even start a game in the playoffs.  I mean seriously, its a horrible trade for the Cardinals.  You shouldn't give up a top position player, when your offense is struggling, for a second tier pitcher.  I am guessing the Reds are loving this trade.

The Padres added a professional hitter to their lineup in Ryan Ludwick.  He can add immediate help to the middle of the lineup and protects Adrian Gonzalez.  The addition of Miguel Tejeda and Ryan Ludwick makes the Padres offense much much better.  The Padres outfielders were hitting a combined .230 this season.  Ludwick adds some pop although hitting in Petco will take some of the HR's away.  I'm excited to see how things shape up towards October.  With the strong starting pitching and bullpen, the Padres are now a legit contender and could do some serious damage in the post season.

Couldn't agree more. I wouldn't mind seing either a deal for a starter or at least giving Stauffer a shot at a rotation spot to lessen the workload on Latos, Richard and LeBlanc. Otherwise, regardless of how this unexpected pennent race ends, our front office took the shot. Can't ask for more than that. Now finish the job, guys!

Yeah,  Westbrook is fairly average as a starter.  Ludwick was a good outfielder and hitter.  Cards got the short end of the stick in my book.

This is a GREAT move 4 all clubs involved!! Ludwick is going to help that line up immediately!! He will put up some good numbers no doubt in my mind! I say he ens the season with over 100 RBIS.
Westbrook has looked great and with Carp and Wainright the Cards just get better!! Plus dont 4get about Garcia!! The kid is the real deal!!! I love this the Padres are 4 real The giants are 4 real this is going to be a great 2ND half!!!! I still say the Card could beat the Phils in the End. But The Pads are the REAL DEAL!!! I like that team.

Mozeliak felt compelled to do something so ended up panicking and making a poor deal.  The Cardinals need Ludwick's defense and the need Ludwick to provide protection for Pujols.  He should trade Rasmus and Jon (Bo Hart) Jay to Padres to get Ludwick back.

They don't need bats the just need to wake up there bats. This also puts Suppan in the bullpen strengthening &nb
sp;that also. I would call it a great trade but it does solve some problems. Also with John Jay playing well as he has they can afford to lose Ludwick.

Thank You Front Office

Padres fans should be stoked about this deal!

GM Jed Hoyer put the pieces together and principal owner Jeff Morad will no doubt commit to (around) 8 million in salary for 2011.
It is nice to see the management team stepping up to put a better product on the field.

So far we have added two experienced players and have kept all our top prospects.

bad trade for the CArds.  Pitching is NOT the problem there.  Need bats and defense.....plus chemistry.  Ludwick was a great clubhouse guy and he'll be missed.
