Dodgers fielding Manny offers, deal not close

Posted on: July 31, 2010 2:08 pm

Manny Ramirez stole the headlines two Julys ago when the contending Dodgers struck at the last minute to acquire him from Boston.

Could he do it again this July?

The Dodgers are fielding phone calls on him in these last three hours leading up today's 4 p.m. EDT non-waivers trade deadline, but a deal right now appears unlikely.

For one thing, sources familiar with the Dodgers' thinking insist that "it has to be a good deal" for Los Angeles to deal the currently disabled Manny and so far, rivals are offering too few cents on the dollar in value.

For another, with Ramirez owed a pro-rated share of his $20 million salary for the rest of this year, he should easily sail through waivers, which should discourage rivals from paying the Dodgers a competitive return for him now.

The White Sox were among a handful of clubs who have contacted the Dodgers over the past 24 hours about Ramirez's availability. Tampa Bay is reportedly another.

Ramirez currently is on the disabled list for a third time this season, this time with a strained calf. He did not even travel with the Dodgers on their current trip to San Diego and San Francisco, opting to rehab at the club's Arizona spring training facility, and the club has grown increasingly disenchanted with him this season.

You're an idiot.  He only brought us to the NLCS two years straight.   When he first came over he had maybe the best 2 months any player in baseball history has ever had.  He made Dodger stadium alive again.  Besides, the Dodgers traded Pedro Martinez before he became Pedro Martinez.  If you don't think that's worse you should probably try watching baseball sometime.  Think before you say things that are abviously wrong and stupid.

Steroids did for Manny and Sammy (Sosa) what breast implants have done for many a young, sexy actress. Well, except I kind of like breast implants. Now that we see Manny for the shell of a hitter, compared to his "Juice Newton" years, all I can say is who would want him for $2 mil let alone the excessive salary he makes these days.

He's a cancer on any team. Stay far far away from him!

Actually, the NL does use the DL.

Yes and the HGH as well.

Not even close to the worst deal the Dodgers have made.  You must not e old enough to remember Pedro Martinez for Delino Deshields.  Now THAT was a bad trade!

Of course the team is disenchanted with him, look what he's done since he left Boston, got hit with a drug expulsion last year for 50 games and hs been on teh disabled list now three times this year, and all for a calling price of $18mil per season.  What a deal.  Plus you can tell his dedication to the team by him "training" in Arizona while the team is on the road to SD and SF.  His legs don't work any more, his power numbers are gone, he is a liability in the field and the National League doesn't use the DL.  What good is he, he will probably go down as the worse trade the Dodgers ever made.

What Scott Miller forgot to write was the White Sox wanted the Dodgers to pay about 90% of what Manny is due to make the rest of the year. I guess Kenny Williams, that Frank McCourt doesn't operate like that. Also, Peter Gammons said this morning on the MLB Network, that Manny is going nowhere. Other teams called about Manny, Tampa and Anaheim, and not the other way around, compared the way the headlines look. But who wouldn't want to rent Manny for a salary drive push for offense production he may provide, which is mostly been protection and batting average, because power is gone.
