Red Sox recruiting Crawford, Werth hard

The Red Sox, looking to add an impact outfielder to their lineup this winter, are taking their cuts: After meeting with free agent Carl Crawford in Houston recently, the traveling road show continued when general manager Theo Epstein and manager Terry Francona met with free agent Jayson Werth and his representatives in Chicago on Wednesday evening, according to sources with knowledge of the talks.

There are no indications that a deal is close with either player, as sources say the discussions are "continuing." Plus, both Crawford and Werth remain highly sought after by other clubs.

Crawford remains the Angels' top target as well, and owner Arte Moreno and Co. continue to put on a full-court press. Though the Angels have been linked to free agent closer Rafael Soriano as well, Crawford remains far and away their top priority. One source with knowledge of the Angels plans says they want Crawford "bad."

Either Werth or Crawford would play well in Fenway Park, which is why Epstein and Francona have made the rounds from Houston to Chicago. It is believed that Scott Boras, Werth's agent, also conducted talks with other clubs while in Chicago on Wednesday and Thursday morning.

Your an idiot.  Please understand the game of baseball before you write anything, typical yankee fan.  So the redsox lacked the support of Pedroia, Youk, Tek, Becket, Ellsbury, Cameron, Martinez among many others who had stints on the DL and still finished with a better record then some PLAYOFF teams.  Lets just say, CC went down for a few weeks, Cano was out, and Texiera got hurt, your yanks wouldnt win 80 games.  Please dont tell me the red sox didnt do anything last year.  Secondly, we arent hitting the bank as much as you think.  Especially when you consider you are going to overpay for Jeter by 10mil/year.  They didnt aggressively go after martinez because they had a cost effective catcher in Salty (please let him pan out) and so they could have the money available for the two outfielders.  (Werth and Crawford for your idiots)  And last point, yes, the Red Sox are spending money, thats because the Yankees have set the standard for overpaying free agents.  whats so wrong with wanting to compete every year.  the redsox have proved time and time again that they have the far superior farm system, and in order to win today, they need those prospects, along with big market money, in order to compete because of the standard yankee operating proceedures.  Top to bottom, red sox organization trumps the yanks in soooooo many ways

Geez Gmen.  They spent the second most in baseball and one 89 games without Pedroia, Youkilis, Ellsbury, and Martinez for one month.  Where are the Yankees without Teixiera, Cano, Granderson?  Guaranteed they don't win 89 games.  Do your homework before making upsurd comments like "and did nothing."  You get A-Rod and Jeter for another 7/4 years. Nothing like a 40yr old infield at $50 Million a year.

 - says the fan of the team that actually spent more money than the Red Sox. Still, pretty ballsy for a Yankees fan to cry about another team's payroll.

These two are going to be worth the money if one team could land both.

Werth and Crawford are great, but they still need a first baseman, catcher, and bullpen help. They might get onr of those two, but not both.
Good luck getting all of those positions filled!

I'm sorry what team had the highest payroll in all of baseball and still couldn't find the road to the world series?? OHHh that's right the Yankees were the team!!!  If figures a yankee fan would post a comment like that about payroll and the red sox trying to "buy " their way back into the playoffs.....Isn't that the norm for the Yankee organization...spend spend spend in offseason and spend spend some more come trade deadline...you want to talk about buying your way into the playoffs..take at look right at home there "GMEN" I'm changing your name to HYMEN

Red Sox trying to buy their way back into the playoffs. They spent the second highest amount last year. They increased their payroll $41 million from 2009 and did nothing.
