Boston-SD finish Gonzalez deal -- for real

Posted on: December 5, 2010 8:44 pm

Yes, Adrian Gonzalez is headed to the Red Sox. The Boston Blockbuster is on.

After taking an unexpected detour Sunday afternoon when contract extension talks reached a stalemate at the 2 p.m. deadline, the Red Sox still finalized the deal about six hours later according to sources.

Yes, the Padres are still receiving the same three prospects -- with a fourth player as a player to be named later -- in return: Pitcher Casey Kelly, power first baseman Anthony Rizzo and fleet center fielder Reymond Fuentes.

While multiple reports had the Red Sox talking with Gonzalez about a six-year extension after he earned $5.5 million -- as scheduled -- in 2011 and the first baseman wanting an eight-year deal, Boston now is content to allow the situation to ride into spring training.

Ostensibly, during the 48-hour weekend negotiating window allowed by major-league baseball, the Red Sox became satisfied that they will be able to strike a deal with Gonzalez.

By waiting to do so, Boston can benefit in two ways:

1. The Red Sox can wait until spring training and make sure that Gonzalez's surgically repaired right shoulder is sound. The surgery was not a major one, and the fact that Gonzalez underwent a battery of tests during his physical exam at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Sox are satisfied enough to still complete the trade speaks volumes.

2. By delaying a multi-year contract agreement, the Red Sox can escape paying luxury tax on what likely will wind up being be a seven-year deal deal worth somewhere between $22 and $24 million a year.

A formal announcement is expected on Monday.

Youk in the OF, seriously?  And you called someone else an idiot?  You don't move a gold glove corner infielder to the OF, EVER!!!  And Beltre's history say he has a 0% chance of repeating his performance next year, regardless of where he's playing.  Anyone that gives him a deal for more than 1 year is an idiot too.

I think the best move now is for the Sox to go all out after Crawford.

And the latest dagger in the back of Padre fans everywhere.  Although, we all knew this was coming, so it wasn't like a dagger in the back, it just sounds more dramatic that way.  This was like a forearm shiver to the face, complete with the guy walking away and taking your dog to boot.  And your dog looking back at you with sadness in his eyes, but knowing he is in a better place, because he is tired of eating scraps and laying around waiting for the dog pound to pick him up as he is undernourished and slightly neglected.  And there is nothing you can do about it.

Alright JC, I understand some people like sports teams even when they dont understand the game/strategy/general concept but please don't come on to these sites and pretend like you have a clue because you look like a complete an utter moron. It was pretty obvious you were completely clueless when you made the contract comment (any baseball fan, my 6 yr old niece included, could tell you that it was pretty obvious he would be getting 20 million plus per yr) but when you compare the hitting ability of martinez to gonzalez it made it clear you are at best a moron. I almost had to laugh when you question whether they're ws contenders. They won almost 90 games last year despite losing almost half their infield (pedroia, youk) and half their of (cameron, ellsbury). I truly question how someone that supposedly follows the game can be this moronic (again im being kind by using these words)

" Gonzalez has a perfect inside-out stroke for Fenway Park." He should hit 40 HRs & 50 doubles there batting 3rd in front of Youkilis & Ortiz.

I am a Yankee fan, but

This is a great deal for the sox. They Get a gold glove 1b who is a great power hitter.

This guy was hitting 30 hr a year for SD in a pitcher's park, with no protection!

This just makes them a more dangerous team, scary good offense!

R U an idiot?

Vmart isnt nearly the same hitter that Gonzo is. Gonzo has hit 30+ HRs and 100+ RBIs for the last 4 yrs. Vmart has not hit more than 25 in his career and his RBI production much lower than Gonzos. Gonzo has won 2 goldgloves and is younger. Hes the quintessential clean up hitter.

The sox were devestated by injury this season. I think pedroia, youk, ellsbury and Gonzo will make a big impact in the lineup this year. When the sox trot out kalish, Lowerie, mcdonald and Nava for half a season and still win 80+ games I dont think its out of the realm to assume that the sox will be a top 6 pick for the WS in 2011.

Before you hate, know your info.

PS-thats assuming that Betre is gone...imagine is he comes back and put Youk in the outfield? sick lineup.

Gonza is a much better all around bat than an ahing VMart, and they didn't lose anything in the field even with the departure of Beltre.  Not saying they are favorites, but keep in mind they won 80-something games without Youk, Pedroia, and  Ellsbury for much of the year.  They will be great again.

you are an idiot, the Hanley trade got us a 2007 World Series Championship, just like the Adrian one will get us a 2011 WS Championship

LOL.... this is pretty funny.
By adding a 1B you're now going to win a World Series Championship?
Gonzo is a great 1B but how does this make them WS favorites? They lost practically the same type of bat in VJ Mart that they gained in Gonzo, plus a better glove in the in field.... and that's the difference maker?

Am I reading this right? 7 year deal at 22 million is about 3 million per year? For Adrian Gonzalez? That's a bargain for one of the top 5 1B in MLB.
