Cubs get their 1B: Carlos Pena

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Moving to plug their hole at first base, the Cubs have agreed to terms with first baseman Carlos Pena on a one-year, $10 million deal that is expected to be announced Wednesday, sources with knowledge of the discussions said late Tuesday night.

Pena, part of Tampa Bay's surge toward the top of the AL East during the past three seasons, gives the Cubs the first baseman they need, the left-handed bat they desire and an excellent defender. Pena was awarded a Gold Glove in 2008.

A 10-year veteran, Pena over the past two seasons has become more of an all-or-nothing hitter. He slumped to a career-worst .196 batting average with a .325 on-base percentage over 144 games for the Rays in 2010, though he did hit 28 homers with 84 RBI.

He is just two seasons removed from a 39-homer, 100-RBI campaign, and in helping Tampa Bay to its first-ever World Series in 2007, Pena hit .282 with a career-high 46 home runs and 121 RBIs.

Among other things, the Cubs are hoping hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo can help Pena make more contact.

"Even if he hits .230 or .240," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. "If he hits .240, that might take him to 40 Johnsons [homers].

"He's a good defensive player, he's good in the clubhouse, he's great in the community."

Looking to re-tool last season's highly disappointing club under new manager Mike Quade, the Cubs this winter need a first baseman and are planning to add pitching depth -- a starting or relief pitcher, whichever comes their way and makes the most sense.

Sorry I don't usually do this, but here's a sniplet of comments from Cub fan "cco22inf" on the board covering Adam Dunn's White Sox signing.
"Dunn is a CAREER .250 hitter, strikes out an avg of 183 times a year."

"Seriously, this is jim thome who strikes out a ton, doesn't get on base , and hasn't had a hall of fame career." immediately contradicted by
"You highlight his walks? LoL nice. That the best you got? 'hey, he walks a lot'. You and your team are a joke."

"This move smacks of desperation and you know it. Enjoy the no work ethic, strike out king."

"Hah, look at the sox fans trying to make lemons out of dog sh!t **** . Really, good signing or bad (bad).... you have zero chance of doing anything with the sitting there."

"Laughing at all the delusional Sox fans who think this strike out king will actually help."

Just to reinterate, I do not hate the Cubs, but I had to share those comments made by one of your fans about Adam Dunn. Enjoy Carlos Pena.

CTHIMS -- The Cubs doing the right thing w/ Sosa would've involved dealing him to NYY while he was still good, bringing back a decent return.  The Skanks would've gave them just about anything back when Sammy was doping.

Honestly who cares...this signing is only to show cub "sheeple" that they are going to try to win next year.  Anyone that knows anything about baseball knows the Cubs have less than a .5% chance of winning the division next year...let alone the WS.  Best scenario Pena has a great year and they trade him come the deadline for some decent yound talent.

Wrigley Field has the longest right field line in the majors.  Look it up.  Is that that the short porch you are referring to?

Everybody just chill! Let the guy work with Jamarillo for a couple months and see what happens. Either way he is a gold glove 1st baseman who bats lefty and will slot nicely between Byrd and Ramirez. In Wrigley he could hit 40+ dingers with that short right porch so before you go whinning about Hendry and all his terrible moves, how about letting the guy actually get a couple months worth of AB's with the Cubs and then we'll see where we stand. Geesh, you poeple would throw your own mom under the bus for no reason wouldn't you???

It's funny how the Cubs did just offer a 1 year deal..They could have offered a 2 or 3 year deal, but they are playing it smart. There are some really good free agents at first next year, ummm including Mr. Pujols whom the Cubs are one of the many teams targeting him. After all my first thought when the Cardinals signed Berkman, was INSURANCE, in case they can't sign Pujols, because everybody knows Berkman can't play the outfield, that's a nightmare a accident waiting to happen.

I'll take Pena over Laroche any day. He can't hit any worse than .196, right? ha
