McLaren "short-term" skipper, Johnson on deck?

Caught off-balance by manager Jim Riggleman's sudden resignation, the Nationals made a rare early exit from the Manager Search Freeway even before "interim."

While searching for an "interim manager", they've named a "short-term manager": Bench coach John McLaren.

Presumably, that means that McLaren's tenure will last anywhere from ... a day, to, a weekend?

General manager Mike Rizzo said earlier Thursday that he promised the team a manager would be in place Friday, when the Nats open a series in Chicago against the White Sox, and in naming McLaren, he keeps that promise.

As for a more permanent interim following Jim Riggleman's startling resignation, sources say, the Nationals will not name that man before Friday.

The Nationals have two men in the front office working as assistants to Rizzo with extensive managerial experience: Davey Johnson, the former New York Mets and Baltimore skipper, and Bob Boone, who has managed in Kansas City and Cincinnati.

Johnson in particular could lend immediate stability and respectability to a team that has won 11 of its past 12 games, including a three-game sweep of Seattle this week.

Named a  senior advisor to Rizzo in November, 2009, Johnson managed the New York Mets to the 1986 World Series title and was the American League manager of the year in Baltimore in 1997. He is one of only six living men to have won a World Series ring as both a player and a manager, along with Alvin Dark, Joe Girardi, Lou Piniella, Mike Scioscia and Red Schoendienst.

More relevant in recent years, Johnson managed Team USA in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, has managed or coached five different Team USA clubs since 2005, including the 2008 U.S. Olympic team that won the Bronze medal in Beijing.

In recent years, he has expressed interest in managing in the majors again.

And at 68, he's 12 years younger than "new" Florida manager Jack McKeon. So he's got that going for him.

@VixCindZnuff:  I don't know what you consider "made up", maybe reality for all I know, but the fact concerning Bill Maher's feelings toward animals just happens to be that he sits on the board of directors of PETA.  Ever heard of them?  You know, they're the loons that go around assaulting women who wear fur coats and people who try to enter restaurants that serve meat or fish.  Looks like you are the one that needs to do the research.

@Mar725, Your response is just what I expected.  You immediately resort to name calling when someone is critical of your post content.  Don't wag your finger at me about intelligence when all you respond with is childish name calling.

While best known as manager of the Mets and Orioles, Davey Johnson was the Cincinnati Reds manager from 1993-1995.   In 1994 the Reds had the 2nd best record in the NL before that strike (66-48).  In 1995 Johnson took the Reds to the NLCS before they lost to Atlanta.   He also managed the Dodgers in 1999-2000.   But I guess since these jobs were not on the east coast they really don't matter.

Kingfish, you are a complete moron

Try posting something about the subject at hand, loser. You rightist idiots as usual have nothing possitive to say, mo ideas on how to solve problems, just negative comments  about what others say. Try an original idea sometime. Oh, I guess that is not possible in your case.

This storie is about a major league manager quiting on his team. Sort of like an Alaskan governer quitint on her state, huh?

Mar725 post is like most Leftist/Liberals

complete NONSENSE that is filled with grammatical errors and misspellings. Like Prune Pelosi said we need to pass the bill  to find out what is in it or Odumba saying increasing debt ceiling is a failure of leadership-correct-Odumba's leadership! What is so idiotic about liberals is that facts mean nothing to them, they threaten and scare with lies. Again Washington has failed-do not say the Nationals but the Senators. Failures again!

Yeah, I hear that Bill Maher has nightly cat sacrifice ceremonies too. And he vomits on children. No, wait, that was a Phillies fan. Sorry!

To the Bill Maher basher, "animal worship"?!  Really?!  Lol, that's what I love about the far right, they just make up stuff and hope people will just accept it as fact without researching it.

As for the Nats, Riggleman taking a hike is neither here nor there, just give the bench coach the job, baseball manager is a very overrated position as far as its importance, just turn in a lineup card and decide when to pinch hit, all he has to do, and Riggleman could never get either of those right.

What happened to Johnson's tenure as Dodgers skipper?  Did 1999 and 2000 Seasons not happen or did McCourt sell that History to pay the wage bill?

Excellent take, Jack. I completely agree with everything you said. Letting Marquis hit yesterady was the most moronic thing I ever saw. No wait, hitting Werth leadoff would top that. No wait, thinking he was Tony LaRussa even tops that. This tam will contend by 2013 if they stay their current coarse. Once there offense catches up with the pitching, this team could contend for years and years. Rixxo may not be a great communicator, but he knows his baseball. The draft has been great for the past 3 years.

Gee, what an intelligent rant! Moron! I only referenced Maher for the new rules segments. Maybe you should try to gain someintelligence before posting here. I do not care if you do not understand the brilliance of Mr. Maher and obviously you are one of the brainwashed Jesus freaks, but try actually reading about how the players felt about Riggleman. This is what the subject is, idiot!
