Boston's Gonzalez sore after HR Derby swings

PHOENIX -- The Home Run Derby always is more physically taxing than you would think, and there Boston's Adrian Gonzalez was before Tuesday night's All-Star Game with a big ice pack on his surgically repaired right shoulder.

Don't worry, Red Sox fans -- he ices it regularly, still, anyway.

But yes, he said, he was sore from participating in Monday's event.

"It's a good sore," Gonzalez said. "Kind of like after weight lifting."

The biggest problem with the Derby, Gonzalez said, is all of the waiting around -- during which muscles tighten.

Boston's Gonzalez sore after HR Derby swings

I can see it all now, somone over swings in home run derby and strains an oblique muscle or something like that, or even worse is out for the rest of the season trying to hit a BP home run. I'm not a big fan of the derby anyway, but I understand Adrian Gonzalez being sore. Usually, the winner of the home run derby gets enammored with the HR ball, and he doesn't have a good 2nd half. Ones I can think of who had this issue in the past(that I remember) were Bobby Abreu when he was with the Phillies and Josh Hamilton of the Rangers. Hamilton, at the time, was on a pace to break the record for RBIs that year, and went kind of downhill after the derby. Same for Abreu.

Scott, I'm sure you can run down the stats of the HR Derby winners and see how many actually slumped after winning it...I don't watch anymore. It's boring and doesn't mean a thing.

Soft body? Are you serious? This guy is one of the most durable players in the game right now.  5 straight years with no DL stint.

I'd say he's doing pretty awesome as is...

Adrian is not soft he he is in very good shape he has never been on the dl for an extended period of time and the shoulder surgery he had last yr was the first major surgery he's had in his career he is probably the best triple crown candidate as well as  the mvp  for the AL so far,  i we miss him in San Diego and wish him the best. Sit back and enjoy a pure hitter put the ball in play!!!

Interesting......I remember when Bobby Abreu won the HR derby....after that he was never the same dynamic player. Adrian Gonzalez should take the week off. He is getting older and he cannot recuperate as quickly as the true HR hitters. Those guys hit homeruns easily...Mr. Gonzalez tries very hard to do it....which makes it even more taxing.
