Pirates make last-minute acquisition of Ludwick

Score one for the Pittsburgh Pirates: They snuck around Cleveland minutes before Sunday's trade deadline and acquired outfielder Ryan Ludwick for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Buyers for the first time since 1992, the Pirates wind up with both Ludwick and first baseman Derrek Lee as they continue their surprising push in the NL Central.

Though disappointing in San Diego since landing there last July, Ludwick's bat, once removed from cavernous Petco Park, could be a boost to the Pirates in a tight NL Central race.

In Ludwick, the Pirates will get a one-time potent bat that has lost its stride in the past year. Ludwick is 3 for his past 21 and is hitting .238 with 11 homers and 64 RBI.

Acquired from the Cardinals at last July's trade deadline to boost a Padres team that then was challenging for the NL West title, Ludwick hit .211 with six homers and 26 RBI in 59 games for the Padres in 2010.

Still, because of Petco Park's vast dimensions, it's hard to say how close Ludwick can come in Pittsburgh to his 2009 form in St. Louis, when he hit 22 homers and collected 97 RBIs, or even '08, when he hit 37 homers with 113 RBI.

To me, the Pirates' deals are a no-lose situation. They may not be a win situation, but we didn't give up much and upgraded our power potential, defense, and leadership. What's the worst that can happen? We miss the playoffs? Well chances are we would have missed the playoffs anyway, even if we traded for a guy like Pence or Beltran. We gave up nothing to improve the team. We'll see if they help to keep us in contention or not. Anything can happen.

Honestly these are not bad moves for the Pirates, whether they finsish in contention or not.  They gave up basically nothing to get these two and if Ludwick heats up in a fairly small park he could have a good 2nd half.  Theres no downside besides the money theyre spending.  It also shows Pirate fans that there is an attempt, albeit small to win now, but theyre not compromising their future

Pirates make last-minute acquisition of Ludwick

I am a Reds fan, so it doesnt matter to me. I do like to root for the little guy, however, and I will just say that by the end of the season all of the Pittsburgh fans and bandwagon jumpers will realize that Derek Lee is a has been piece of turd and Ludwick is one of those guys who had one good season and the rest is just bull. I actually think the addition of these two will hurt the Pirates and they will spiral downward. Good Luck Buc fans.

Wow canes...you seem very hurt...youre originally from detroit?? or up set that the lionswill never amount to anything or up set that thee canes gotsmoked by tOSU???
Yes I am originally from Detroit, but I am far from hurt.  I long ago gave up hope that the Cowardly Lions would ever amount to anything, although they will probably win the SB long before the Brownies.  At least this year their D-Line will be good.  OSU was cheating when they won and still would have lost but for a horrible PI call.  Unless you count Mount Union's numerous D-III titles, its funny how the only team from Ohio that has won anything in the past 30 years (Reds 1990 WS is the last major title in the state) had to cheat to win.  A few years ago ESPN the Mag did the 25 worst sports cities in America, and Cleve-land was #1 by a long shot.  Drew Carey made it seem like a fun place, but you can only put so much lipstick on a pig.   I think Ernest Byner just fumbled again . . .

We all know this is not enough to help the Pirates. This was a feable attempt from management to make it look like they wanted to make a run this year....

I think they are good, but they weren't counting on being in this position.

I am a long time Phillies fan but I am also pulling very much for the Pirates! I think its great that the Pirates front office is at least trying to ADD to the Pirates fight for the NL Central rather than the usual dumping of players for prospects. Clint Hurdle has that team believing in themselves and the Phils sweep this weekend should not sway that at all. It was a tough and long trip for the Bucs this past week with the long games in Atlanta which included a terrible call loss to the Braves. I attended two games this weekend and the Pirates were spent a bit after that tough week. But this Pirates team will not fold up and I expect them to bounce back. Pittsbugh is a great city with a fabulous ballpark and I truly hope that the Bucs stay in this thing. Best of luck to all!!

Seriously, I like the additional poewr of Ludwick and Lee, as well.  Tho, I think Ludwick is a F/A at the end of the year.  Our lineup seriously needed an injection of long ball threats form the corners; now we have two.
Ludwick's 2011 stats:
BA  .238
OBP.301
SLG.373

These days, Ludwick is more of a long ball possibility than threat. Maybe the change of setting will do him some good but that's also what folks said when he went to San Diego.

I do like the addition of Lee.

Padres Dump Ludwick in Last Minute Deal

The Padres managed to beat the trade deadline in making a deal to get someting for a disappointing player.  He may make a good 4th outfielder or insurance down the stretch for the Pirates.  Or maybe the Pirates know what's wrong with Ludwick and can get him going.
