Tigers roar to longest winning streak since 1934

The incredible streak roars on.

No, it maybe isn't record-setting in major-league annals. But when Detroit won its 12th consecutive game Wednesday, a 6-5 come-from-behind job over the White Sox, it reached way back into history: No Tigers team has won that many in a row since ... gulp ... 1934.

The Tigers right now can do no wrong. They hit. They've got starting pitching. They've got a lockdown bullpen. Jose Valverde converted his 44th consecutive save opportunity, a club record for a single season.

And before that, when it all looked hopeless, Ryan Raburn drilled a solo homer in the 9th inning to pull the Tigers to within 5-3. Then All-Star Alex Avila crushed the first pinch-hit homer run of his career, a game-tying, two-run homer.

What once was a tight AL Central race now is a shambles. The only question left is when the Tigers will clinch, and that looks almost certain to be this weekend in Oakland. Their magic number over the White Sox now is one game. It's three over Cleveland.

And as of now, winners of 12 in a row, Detroit has another magic number: 1934. It's incredible to think that no Tigers team has won that many in a row since the Mickey Cochrane days. But these Tigers right now are just that, incredible.

Didnt the tigers win more than 12 in a row back in the 80's with trammel, whittaker, morris, etc?

Sure is nice to see this kind of success by the Tigers, it truly is incredible, almost unbelievable.

For the first 2/3' of the season, there were sure alot of critics against the Tigers, now that they are looking fantastic everyone seems to be jumping on the " Tigers BandWagon". And that's O.K.-In fact, Im glad that is happening.

There is something special about this club like there was in 84. Team chemistry is great and when you pay attention closely, you can see the looseness and fun this team is having, from the Bat Boy to Jim Leyland and all the players inbetween. There are so many stories on the Tigers club right now, from Verlander and Valverde, and the pitching staff just doing a complete 180* turn around, to Cabrera & V-Mart's bats, to Avila's stamena behind the plate and the Bull Pen is not to shabby right now.

It's turned magical, and the Tigers right now have the team that can go deep into the playoffs.

Go Tigers!!!

I think JV should be considered for the MVP, and I believe he's deserving. He's meant everything to our team this year, and his numbers are incredible. If he gets 25 wins, he'll be difficult to overlook. I understand the argument about a pitcher is not an everyday player, etc., and that is certainly valid. However, I don't see anyone in the AL who's running away with it. Sure, Adrian Gonzalez has strong numbers, but not astounding power numbers. Plus, he hits in a stacked line-up. I'd be taking a hard look at Jose Bautista if it's simply about power numbers. So in this field, I can see JV getting it, and I hope he does. Go Tigs! Great win today.

"Can't say there's an MVP candidate here"...
I believe Cabrera would be considered a solid MVP candidate and Martinez is also noteworthy.
Verlander will never get it, but if he makes it to 25 there will at least be further discussion on the worth of a pitcher - He will definitely have the most wins & potentially the lowest ERA (both AL & NL).
Having said that, with all the NY & BOS love - it will be Gonzalez (would be Grandy if he didn't fall into a crapper lately).

Tigers roar to longest winning streak since 1934

It's a great time to be a sports fan from the great state of Michigan.  Our Tigers are rolling like nothing we've seen in many years.  Hope they don't cool off.  Our Lions have a football team again and no matter what anyone says, the Super Bowl isn't out of the question.  I didn't say that they definetely will make it to the Super Bowl, but it is NOT out of the realm of possibility.  Even my beloved Michigan Wolverines are kicking @ss and taking names.  To all you Michigan haters, get ready, it's going to be a long season for you.  We are just getting started and will continue to get better each game.  The winningest college football program is back and it'll be another 100 years before we have another 3 year drought.  WE ARE MICHIGAN and not just the Wolverines!!  Go Blue and I love this state!  God's country.

It's amazing it has been that long since the Tigers won 12 straight.  The '84 Tigers won 35 of their first 40 games on the way to an 104 win season.  I guess that year didn't include a 12 game win streak.  I would be nice to see this year's team experience the same level of post game success.  Back then all you had to do was win 7 games to be champs.

In one word? INCREDIBLE! A month ago no one gave this team a chance of making any noise in the post season and today they are the talk of the baseball world. Do not forget before you disregard what they have done these past 12 games that the Tigers are playing all of the same teams that all of the other playoff bound teams have played. This has not been done since 1934. Al Kaline and his crew didn't do it in 1968. Alan Trammell and his crew didn't do it (although 35-5 to start that year was pretty good too!). Even the Tigers 0f 2006 didn't do it. This is one of those "where were you when" moments that we should all enjoy. And if you aren't a Detroit Tiger fan, don't worry. there is plenty of room on the bandwagon when you decide to board!

My official World Series prediction has the Tigers winning it all in 6 games over the Phillies. Justin Verlander wins the World Series MVP with 2 complete game victories,

Aaaaah, no wonder they say "patience is a virtue."  It seems like forever since 1984.   What's really nice is when you're a Tiger fan year-in and year-out.  Let the bandwagon jumpers begin!!!  Go Tigers!!!
