Lost at sea while Sexson cashes in

They sacrificed hitting coach Jeff Pentland last week and then fired general manager Bill Bavasi on Monday.

Now, if the Seattle Mariners really want to show their players and fans they mean business, they'll pull the plug on the miserable Richie Sexson at first base, play someone who at least has a chance and swallow whole what's left of Sexson's $14 million this season.

The club's play this season has been humiliating from all angles. The 22-45 record is the majors' worst, they were swept by Washington (who had the majors' worst record only a few days ago) over the weekend, they've lost seven consecutive home games and trail the Los Angeles Angels in the AL West by 17 1/2 games.

Bavasi, Mariners' GM since November, 2003, has been a short leash ever since that bizarre day two Septembers ago when Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln extended the contracts of both Bavasi and then-manager Mike Hargrove's contract while publicly affirming that each was on Lincoln's "hot seat."

What kind of message was that?

If you didn't have complete faith in them, why extend them?

Make no mistake, that's part of the reason the Mariners are in the shape they're in. It took the hands of many to muck things up this badly, not just Bavasi. The hiring of Hargrove back in October, 2004, was uninspired as well.

In retrospect, the fact that that Mariners were surprisingly competitive last season may have been the worst thing that could have happened to them. All it did was delay the inevitable: That this is a roster that needs to be blown to smithereens.

Sexson (.212, nine homers, 23 RBI, 64 strikeouts in 193 at-bats) continues to gum up the works. Jose Vidro as a designated hitter is an argument to simply let the pitchers bat. Adrian Beltre (.227) is a miserable situational hitter. Hell, most of these guys are: Somehow, Seattle won two of three in Toronto last week while scoring all of six runs. Against the Nationals over the weekend, they got 10 in three games.

So Lee Elia, Pentland's replacement, didn't come with a magic wand. Big surprise. That meltdown day earlier this month on which president Chuck Armstrong delivered a pre-game blistering to manager John McLaren and his coaching staff while McLaren issued a post-game tirade and Bavasi took away post-game food and towels and forced the players to stand by their lockers and face the media didn't work, either. Really?

Bavasi's assistant, Lee Pelekoudas, will take over as GM on an interim basis, mainly because somebody must fill the spot. The moves with Pentland and Bavasi are only the beginning.

This is a club in dire need of a complete overhaul, from the executive offices to the clubhouse.

While your ripping on Richie Sexson, don't forget Adrian Beltre's fat contract.  He was a 1 year wonder in LA, and the organization that got suckered into signing him to a long-term deal off of that was the M's...his 48 HR breakout season in a contract year smells of steroids or HGH....he hasn't come close to duplicating those numbers.

Update on that

The three minor league pitchers the O's got in the Bedard deal are all sub-4 ERA, sub 1.5 WHIP, and showing good control.  Chris Tillman has struck out a lot of batters in AA and has really good numbers; I think his ERA is in the 2's and the WHIP is around 1.2.  Who knows if any of them will pan out, but Bedard is clearly one-and-done in Seattle.  Could be the O's revenge for the Glenn Davis deal so, so long ago.

Meanwhile...

The O's ended up with Adam Jones and George Sherrill.  I don't know what the minor league talent in that deal looks like, but did the O's actually get one over on somebody?  Really?

They sent Balentien down becuase the way his contract is structure if he spends about a week more in the minors this season his contract last an addition year. So by doing this they can keep in longer in is the goal. Plus Jeff could use some more at bats in the majors, and with Ichro in right you have to keep reed to play center.

This Mariners team would have won this year if Mike Hargrove was still the manager. Mike knows how to win. He is just like Bobby Cox. It don't matter how bad of a team you give him, he will still find a way to win. Sounds like Miller is downplaying Hargrove a little bit. Right now Bedard, Hernandez, and Silva should be the best rotation this season. Even CBS Sportsline geniuses said they were the best in baseball, but now you guys are flipping the script and saying this team is bad?

Miller and the rest of the CBS team is a full load of crap.

I know they dont have much in their minor league system now to look at, but anythings better than just sticking with Sexson, Beltre and Vidro. Rotate some guys up, see how they do. Get some major league at bats and experience under they're belts. Meanwhile, start planning on some major roster moves for next season. And start taking lessons from Oakland and Atlanta on how to develope players.

I love the Roger Dorn comparison to Bedard.  I can't blame him though.  Next year is a contract year.  I wonder did anyone interview this guy before the trade?  His attitude toward the local media is miserable.  My wish list to go is Sexson, Vidro, Cairo, Batista, Washburn, and Bedard.  Bedbard should be worth something in trade.  The rest is questionable but minor leaguers need to be brought in from AAA and AA.  Why Balentien was sent down is beyond me.  it's not like they are in jeopardy of losing games because they are giving youngsters a try out.

Craigflorida, we did want Griffey back when we thought we were still in it, now, i don't want to expose the greatest player in franchise history to the worst team in franchise history. Talk about a lose-lose. Eric Bedard reminds me of Roger Dorn (Major League) 99 pitches per game and done. "What it was out of my reach. What do you want me to do dive for it?"  Doesn't want to damage anything for this group of stiffs.

"Jose Vidro as a designated hitter is an argument to simply let the pitchers bat." I live near Seattle, I watch this sad sad team, and that could be one of the funniest lines I've read in a long time. Thats right up there with the post-game guys saying Willie Bloomquist's at bat in the last inning was comical against K-Rod a few weeks back (thats the Mariners post-game guys too not the Angels).  17.5 games back in June, so happy I like the Dodgers too, oh wait, they suck too.
