Padres send Dodgers a gift out west

San Diego trading Greg Maddux to the hated Los Angeles Dodgers is Exhibit A in how the grand ol' game has changed over the years.

Time was when the Padres would have rather ingested a few gallons of WD-40 motor oil than do anything to aid the hated Dodgers in their quest to win a NL West title.

Now? Whatever. The Padres primary goal now is to cut payroll -- for the rest of this year and for 2009 and, possibly, depending on owner John Moores' divorce, beyond -- and if that means helping out the Los Angeles friggin' Dodgers, well, that's just the way it goes.

And beyond that, it's simply a matter of professional courtesy: Maddux deserves far more than the Padres are able to give him, given the lousy decisions they've made and the embarrassing team they've fielded, so they figure the least they can do is place him in what could be the final pennant race of his illustrious career.

It's a move bound to help the resurgent Dodgers, who are brimming with confidence in the days since Manny Ramirez' arrival. Picking up both Ramirez from Boston and Casey Blake from Cleveland were huge boosts that have helped Joe Torre's club climb into a first-place tie with Arizona, setting up one final sprint toward the finish line.

Maddux won't have as significant of an impact as Ramirez or Blake, but he'll help. Especially if, as expected, Brad Penny is finished for the season. Los Angeles needs pitching, and Maddux, even into his 40s, remains pretty darned good at providing five or six quality innings every fifth day.

And as for the Padres? Maddux's departure simply means there's one less reason to bother watching them the rest of this season. And there weren't that many left to begin with.

If I had to choose between pitching Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz to pitch Game 7 of the World Series I'd pick Maddux every time.

Broxton fastest in baseball

Jonathan Broxton threw 101.0 mph last night in the 9th inning to tie the 2008 MLB season record . See Top Gun list.

The article says that Brad Penny is done for the year.  He'll be put on the DL and Maddux takes his place.  The Dodgers will move Johnson, Kuroda to the pen for quality long relief - always useful in a pennant race.  It's not a demotion for anyone, just a different assignment in the best interest of success for the team.

Padre's front office is a joke.  I will miss Maddux here in San Diego, he is one of the few guys who could play for any team and I would still root for him.  Enjoy the gift LA.

Greg Maddux--a former Dodger now a Dodger?

I enjoy watching Greg Maddux pitch, and his brother is pitching coach for the Milwaukee Brewers.  I'm just wondering why he didn't stay with the Dodgers a couple years ago when he was traded and helped them win a pennant.  Oh, well, the move won't be that far, just from San Diego to L.A.

Johnson will stay for middle relief. Choke Ho Park will be put on an a dingy outside the beach break off Long Beach and set adrift back to southeast Asia. And we'll all be the better for it. Good riddance.

Yes WD-40 is an industrial lubricant propelled by a hydrogen flourocarbon. Highly flammable plus works swimmingly on squeaky door hinges. The Padres could use some on their hitters joints and the Padres GM's wife could use it on his wallet. Oh never mind, the lawyers will take of that. LA is set up nicely for a post season run. I don't know what else they have to do other than win a freaking playoff series. Let's go boys! THINK BLUE!!!!!!!

Who gets demoted?  I guess Jason Johsnon is the odd man out.  Billingsley, Kershaw, Kuroda and innings eater Lowe have all been on fire.  Seems to me, we should have gotten a closer/set up however there is nothing out there.

At this point anyone is better than Brad Penny right now so I guess Greg Maddux is quite an improvement
