Dear Gary (on St. Mary's and Patrick Mills)

Here's Thursday's Dear Gary ...

Dear Gary: I realize it was international competition, but Patty Mills from St. Mary's put on quite a show vs. all competition (especially the USA) in the Olympics.  I noticed he (and St. Mary's) are not really on any of your radars. Any thoughts on Patty and SMC this year?

Any school returning the top three scorers from a 25-win team should be in for good things.

Thus, I expect good things from St. Mary's.

Naturally, I'll pick the Gaels to finish second in the West Coast Conference behind Gonzaga, as would any reasonable person. And though I don't have them in the preseason Top 25 (and one), I do think they'll make the NCAA tournament for the second straight season, which would be a nice achievement.

As for Mills, yeah, he was pretty good in the Olympics, huh?

He averaged 14.2 points and dropped 20 on Team USA to impress Mike Krzyzewski.

"I'm just glad my Duke team doesn't have to play Saint Mary's," Krzyzewski said. "He'll be an NBA guard.”

Someday, I suppose.

But for now he's a St. Mary's guard.

And that's the main reason the Gaels will be a threat to crack the Sweet 16.

If somebody wanted to argue that Saint Mary's belongs in the preseason Top 25, I wouldn't call them stupid.

Again, I don't have the Gaels ranked.

But it's reasonable to make their case.

Hahaha... Ben Allen. Good luck with that.

Dear Gary (on St. Mary's and Patrick Mills)

Gary ... last year about this time I responded to your criticism of three WCC coaches picking SMC over Gonzaga by observing that you hadn't factored in Patty Mills and predicted that he would star for the Australian Olympic team. Still I agreed with you that Gonzaga should be favored in the WCC. I also agree with you this year with respect to Gonzaga. But SMC is right there, a mininum top 15 team and they will be on your list quick. This year's SMC team will be far better than last year's team. Not only will Patty have one year of experience, the Gaels add 6-11 sharpshooter Ben Allen, an Indiana transfer, and a talented freshman wing, Colin Chiverton. But the real key is that the following players in the rotation are all seniors or better in terms of experience: Diamon Simpson and Ian O'Leary (true seniors), Omar Samhan and Wayne Hunter (fourth year juniors), Carlin Hughes, Yussef Smith and Lucas Walker (fifth year seniors). That is a recipe for success.
