Withey planning to transfer from Arizona

Freshman Jeff Withey is expected to transfer out of the Arizona program before ever playing a game.

The Tucson Citizen on Wednesday reported Withey skipped an afternoon practice, which immediately sparked questions about his future given how his mother had been quoted extensively expressing her displeasure with Lute Olson's abrupt retirement last week. Even then, a Withey transfer seemed realistic. Late Wednesday it was confirmed as a reality, and now the Wildcats will embark on a less-than-ideal season without one of their primary post players.

Withey was ranked as the 35th-best prospect in the Class of 2008. That the 6-foot-11 center will never actually play for the Wildcats means he'll join Brandon Jennings (now a pro in Italy) and Emmanuel Negedu (now a freshman at Tennessee) as Class of 2008 standouts who signed with Arizona last November but have opted not to follow through on the pledge given the uncertainty surrounding the program.

Arizona's first exhibition is Nov. 6 against Incarnate Word.

The Wildcats will be coached this season on an interim basis by Russ Pennell.

Withey planning to transfer from Arizona

Tucson paper this morning indicated that no decision has yet been finalized. If Withey wants to play elsewhere right away, the UofA would have to release him from his scholarship. If that were done, the university would be penalized vis a vis "Academic Progress Rate"--something that should not be treated lightly since it could cost some future scholarships. My guess is that Livengood (AD) will not grant a release, and the kid will have to sit out a year. An equitable result if he really wants to bail.

I remember him jumping ship from UofL also, which was okay with me (in that we got Samuels and Jennings instead)

He's still a beast at 6'11" so there will be quite a few suitors for him...

I could potentially see Pitino maybe taking him back but it seems that Pitino is more interested in ex-Arizona committ Mike Moser (and seems to be leading that charge)

He would fit into Washington perfectly with Brockman and Artem Wallace graduating next year.

Withey planning to transfer from Arizona

All you guys and I mean the posters of cbs sportsline are in sensative,  I don't  think you guys think before you jump to place a post about a young man no even 20 years old, to bash this young man for changing his mind about a university.  No question I feel very sorry for coach Olson and this very difficult decision that had to be made, anyway before I get side tracked we must also think about the student athlete.  I am quite sure Mr. Olson came to Mr. Withey home and promised him many think including being his coach for the next few years.  Lute Olson is without questions one of the best coach in college bball, and any young kid would be grateful to play for such a wonderful coach.  Mr. Olson has put many people in the league and Mr. Withey would love to be in the league someday so of course he choose Mr. Olson to delivery his dreams.  Now his coach has left(retire) him and we all ask what is this youngter to do.  Any decision this young kid make I am with him 100 %.  These are tough time for this young man and Mr. Withey has a tough road ahead.  Mr. Withey is still nearly 7 feet tall  and someday he may play in the league cause you can't teach height.  So all you haters stop hating and wish this young man and coach Lute Olson good luck.

Just some thoughts.

Withey planning to transfer from Arizona

am so happy to hear about  his mothers displeasure, a stroke is a "huge" inconvenience
.  So sorry Miss Withey. I am not sure what to make of it though
I"m not gonna try and say that Olson didnt have a stroke or that it didnt contribute to his leaving but, I will say that I'm willing to bet the farm there is more to Olson leaving than him having a stroke. I dont think its fair to critisize anybody for being upset and wanting to leave that program right now.

Withey planning to transfer from Arizona

If Chase was a top 15 pick he'd have left Arizona for the pros. He wasn't. He slipped into the second round according to the "experts." Coach O told Chase he was going to be back to coach the team, because that's what he planned to do. If medical conditions prohibited that, it's not Lute's fault. He would be coaching right now if he could. As for your idiotic comment about holding the program he built, hostage, what are you thinking? Or are you thinking at all? Doesn't sound like it.

Withey planning to transfer from Arizona

First, let me state I vaguely remember reading some things last year about Withey committing to Louisville and later changing his mind to head for Arizona.    If I'm correct, the kid got ripped back then for flip-flopping and his mother caught some heat for yapping to the local press about her son wanting to be closer to home.  Whatever.
As much as I like to rip on players who like oversell themselves to the media and appear to think they're the second coming of Wilt Chamberlain or Michael Jordan coming out of high school, I have to take the kid's side on this one.  Let's remember that Coach Olson was not being 100% honest with anyone in the Arizona program about his health or his mental state while continuing to represent the program as a coach, recruiter, or part-time father to many of his players.  Why should we force the kid to stay when he committed to something that wasn't being honest with him or his family?  If the recruits were told Olson might be leaving before their time at 'Zona was up, then the family and player knew what was coming.  We all know now this wasn't the case.  With that said, I still wish Coach Olson a healthy retirement and all the best.
However, let me finish with this thought -- I'll be first in line when Withey picks another place and tries to jump ship again.  He's getting his mulligan for Arizona and that's fair in my eyes.  After that, he's fair game for the attacks and ridicule.

Good for him, lute olson has held this program hostage for 2 years, where is the comittment to the kids,,Chase Budinger would have been a top 15 pick in NBA draft but wanted to play for Olson who told Budinger straight out that he would be back this year..If there was any ? that he might not be back he should have told every kid that...
