The Poll Attacks

Do the voters even follow the scores?

Sometimes, I don't think so.

And that's why I have the Poll Attacks.

AP poll: So I looked at the rankings, saw Alabama got three votes and prepared to kill the person who would dare place the Crimson Tide 23rd on their ballot despite a season-opening home loss to Mercer, otherwise known as the team picked sixth in the Atlantic Sun. And then guess what happened? I realized the ballot in question belongs to Seth Davis, and I like Seth Davis, and now I'm stuck because I can't really rip Seth Davis, can I?

I mean, we have the same employer.

So I'd like to take this moment to ask Seth a private question.

The rest of you can skip to the bottom.

(Dear Seth: What the hell are you doing? Why would you put me in this spot? You know I Poll Attack, and you know I can't ignore you ranking an Alabama team that was questionable to begin with and is now 0-1 with a home loss to Mercer. Please don't do this to me again. You're making the Poll Attacks awkward. Talk to you soon. And I hope you're well. -- GP)

Coaches poll: The coaches had better be glad I haven't figured out a way to see their ballots yet, because if so I'd probably destroy the clown who voted for Washington because I doubt I like that guy as much as I like Seth Davis. So what I'd probably do is save all the vitriol I would normally dish to the goofy AP voter of the week and redirect it towards the coach who placed Washington on his Top 25 ballot.

Because yes, there was coach who did such a thing despite the fact that Washington lost to Portland, a team picked sixth in the West Coast Conference. Honestly, I'm not even sure how anybody could've been ranking Washington in the preseason, but the preseason is the preseason and I'll let pretty much anything slide in the preseason (except the ranking of Cal State-Northridge). But it's no longer the preseason. Now we have actual games on which to base our opinions, and any opinion about Washington should be based on it losing to freaking Portland.

That's not what a Top 25 team does.

That's what an average Washington team does.

Because that's what an average Washington team did.

I saw the box score with my own eyes.

And it's just too bad some coach with a ballot did not.

Gary--switching directions--are my Hurricanes ranked where they should be?  How about the rest of the ACC?

Since the Final Four is in my old hometown (Detroit), could this be the Canes' year and should I make plans to go?

Are you coming down on Feb. 15 when Carolina pays a visit?  The next day is a psuedo-holiday (Presidents Day).

Losing to Portland no matter where it happened is worse than losing to portland state... not that it matters losing to portland state would be really horrible as well... UW has one of the biggest campuses in America and is part of the Pac 10. There is NO EXCUSE whatsoever for any team in the Pac 10 to lose to Portland... not even oregon state

While this might be true, and I believe it because I once got on Dennis Dodd for an error concerning Kansas' helmets before it was fixed and had KU fans jump on me who never saw the original, the fact is that one was an NCAA tournament team last year. That one was Portland State. Portland, on the other hand, is not a good WCC team. Losing to Portland might be worse than Portland State.

The Poll Attacks

Multiple press releases made the same mistake about the location (home/away), I was pretty confused myself and guessing on who to trust. Anything published by UW is unreliable.

No kidding.

I tucked my son in an hour ago.

And now I'm heading to a basketball game.

Strange.

GP, I'll see the game shortly at FedEx Forum, myself.  Gotta love the 11PM games for TV's benefit.  At least we didn't get that 1AM slot...

I'll be watching UK-UNC from my couch, I believe. Gonna stay home this week, then head to Utah for the weekend.  I'll see BYU hoops on Friday night and Utah-BYU football on Saturday.
