Xavier, Baylor headline next year's Old Spice

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Officials here at the Old Spice Classic just announced next year's field for the event.

Here it is:

  • Alabama
  • Baylor
  • Creighton
  • Iona
  • Marquette
  • Michigan
  • Xavier

An eighth team will be finalized at a later date, but a possible storyline from the seven programs locked in could include an early look at the player who should be the nation's best incoming freshman, that is if John Wall actually follows his AAU coach to Baylor. Beyond that, it seems obvious that the 2009 field won't match the 2008 field that featured three top 12 teams (Michigan State, Gonzaga and Tennessee). But the Old Spice Classic has still become one of the best early season tournaments in college basketball in a matter of just three years, thanks primarily to Disney World being a nice destination for Thanksgiving and the exposure ESPN provides the event's participants.

Xavier, Baylor headline next year's Old Spice

I know this is off topic, but you seem to have some pull/know-how around here.  Here's a question: Why isn't the winner of the Las Vegas Invitational (UK) posted on the front page with the winners of some of these other tourneys (like the Old Spice)?  The list isn't billed as "the most hyped" or "most exclusive" pre-season tourneys, so I'm not sure why the LVIT got left out.  There are millions of us crazy UK fans pondering this exact question.  Fix it.

It's because there is a grand conspiracy among everybody in college basketball to underrate and/or shortchange Kentucky.

Serious answer: I have no idea. All I know is that there are 72 days and 16 hours until Duke-North Carolina.
