What You Need To Know

Kansas got a big start against Kansas State.

Jodie Meeks got a big start, middle and finish against Tennessee.

Here's Wednesday morning's What You Need To Know:

Notable game from Tuesday: Kansas jumped to an 18-0 lead and held off Kansas State's rally to beat the Wildcats in a match-up of Big 12 rivals. Final score: KU 87, KSU 71. Sherron Collins got 24 points and Tyshawn Taylor added 20 for the Jayhawks, who are 12-4 overall, 1-0 in the Big 12 and the winners of a conference-opening game for the 18th consecutive season. Meantime, Kansas State is 11-5 overall, 0-2 in the Big 12.

Notable performance from Tuesday: Jodie Meeks took 22 shots, made 15 and finished with 54 points in Kentucky's 90-72 victory at Tennessee. The effort allowed Meeks to set the school-record for 3-pointers (10) in a game. It also means Meeks now holds the UK record for most points in a game; the previous record was Dan Issel's 53-point performance in the 1969-70 season. Meeks has scored at least 32 points five times in 17 outings.

Notable game scheduled for Wednesday: Wake Forest must now do what North Carolina could not, i.e., beat Boston College, in order to stay perfect. The Demon Deacons are coming off Sunday's huge win over UNC. They're led by sophomore star Jeff Teague (20.6 points per game). On the other side is Tyrese Rice, who is averaging 17.3 points per game. Tip-off is set for 9 pm ET, and it's worth noting that a Wake Forest victory would ensure a match-up of unbeatens this weekend. Under that scenario, we'd have a 15-0 team ranked No. 2 (WFU) facing a 16-0 team ranked No. 9 (Clemson) on Saturday afternoon at Littlejohn Coliseum.

What You Need To Know

I do not think any of us ever said Georgetown-SU was in the same league as UNC-Duke... nothing is in basketball that rivalry and the Red Soc-Yanks are the two biggest in sports.  But, SU-Georgetown is the second biggest in College Hoops, even if far behind Duke-UNC.

What You Need To Know

Interesting that so far the 3 people who have questioned Gary's Need to know post are all Syracuse homers.  To even suggest that Syr-Gtwon is the same league as Duke UNC is preposterous.  Yes, both schools have history, and both are very good this year, but it doesn't mean that it is the best rivalry in CBB.  That would be like saying the Phillies-Mets rivalry is the best in baseball just because the Phillies and Mets had good teams.  The Yankees didn't make the playoffs last year.  Did that take the luster off that rivalry?  Heck no!!

Either way, both will be good games, and there is a very good chance the Big East game will be better.  But Gary had to make a call, and right now, Wake is a bigger story since they just knocked off UNC and are undefeated.

BTW - UCLA-USC is the second biggest rivalry in CBB.  Just kidding.

What You Need To Know

The thing is, Gary, Syracuse V. Georgetown is NOT just merely another very good game in a long line of very good Big East games. This is one of the greatest rivalries in college basketball!! And it is the first time since the mid to late 90's that both are final four contenders in the same season. I don't know if you remember the battles SU and Georgetown had back in the 80's and 90's, but it doesn't even compare to the current Duke-UNC rivalry, IMO. The fire and swagger is back on both sides, which makes this game 50x's better than Wake and BC. I mean c'mon, give me a break. And to compare SU-Georgetown to say Notre Dame-Louisville is ridiculous. This is NOT just another great game in a league full of great games. It's above that. But I guess the only rivalry espn, cbs ext. cares about is Duke-UNC.

What You Need To Know

It's OK Gary we'll let you edit your post and change the Notable Game for Wednesday to SU v. G'town.  We'll all pretend this never happened.

What You Need To Know

Gary, I understand that Wake Forest is the hot team right now, heck, I have them number two ahead of Duke too.  I also somewhat understand what you mean when you say that the Syracuse-Georgetown game is "merely another very good game in a long line of very good Big East games" but, the Wake game is just a so-so game in a list of good ACC games.  When Wake plays Duke, that is the game to watch Wake but, tonight it is all about Syracuse's high powered offense, against Georgetown's revamped Princeton offense, and usually solid defense.  Not to mention the Syracuse-Georgetown rivalry is the second biggest in College Hoops.  Tomorrow morning when we're all watching the highlights from tonight's games the top story will not be Wake putting BC back in its place in Boston, it will be the gut-wrenchingly close battle between SU, and GT.  GO Orange[men]!

What You Need To Know

Good morning Gary,

I always find time to read your blogs and I appreciate your equality within the college basketball realm, you are one of the few.  I just have one question to ask, What is your projection on UCLA?  I know they lost many key guys to the NBA but I for one believe they can still make some noise come tournament time.  Thanks again by the way!

What You Need To Know

I'll address both posts.

First, I do think Clemson is for real. Are the Tigers better than Wake Forest, Duke or North Carolina? I don't know. But they deserve the top 10 ranking they have, and I'm planning a Thursday column about them. So look for that. And then look for me at Littlejohn Coliseum on Saturday, because I'm flying in for the game.

As for why Wake Forest-BC instead of Syracuse-Georgetown, well, I just think there is a lot of interest in Wake right now because of what happened Sunday night, and the Teague-Rice match-up is great, and BC just beat UNC, so it's possible the Eagles could do the same to Wake Forest, I guess, but I doubt it goes that way .That said, if you wanted to argue that Syracuse-Georgetown is "more notable" I wouldn't disagree. But if I had to make my case I'd argue that it's merely another very good game in a long line of very good Big East games, no different than one that was played two nights ago or one that will be played this weekend. They all kind of run together. So that's why I picked Wake Forest-BC -- though, again, I'm aware that Georgetow-Syracuse is the game featuring the better matchup.

What You Need To Know

for my money you're one of the top CBB guys in the business. which is why i'm curious that Wake/BC is tonight's notable game, not Syracuse/G'Town? really? this game could give my grandma a hard**, what gives?

What You Need To Know

What are your thoughts on Clemson? Do you think they are for real this year, or will they fade back to middle of the pack like the last few seasons? I guess Saturdays game will be the measuring tape.
