Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

CLEMSON, S.C. -- It'll be a debate, because people love to debate.

But there really shouldn't be any debate at all.

So go ahead AP voters -- and you too, coaches -- and slot Wake Forest No. 1 on your ballots now that top-ranked Pittsburgh has lost at Louisville. Why? Because otherwise you'll be wrong, that's why. Dino Gaudio's team is 16-0 with wins over No. 5 North Carolina, No. 10 Clemson and No. 21 Baylor. One of those games was at home (UNC), one was on the road (Clemson) and the other came on a neutral court (Baylor) -- meaning the Demon Deacons have proved they can beat you here, there or over yonder, and they have all the ingredients of a traditional No. 1 team.

A star?

Yes.

His name is Jeff Teague.

At least three future NBA players?

Yes.

Their names are Jeff Teague, Al-Forouq Aminu and James Johnson.

A strong defense?

Yes.

They have one of the five most efficient defenses in the country, according to KenPom.com.

So while I like Duke, Connecticut and Pittsburgh plenty -- you have my permission to rank them second, third and fourth, if you want -- the reality is that none of them can match Wake Forest's body of work, if only because Wake Forest's body of work doesn't include a loss. The lone one-loss team that can even try to make a case for the No. 1 spot is Duke, which is 16-1 overall and 4-1 against schools currently ranked in the AP Top 25; that's impressive, no question. But Wake Forest is 16-0 overall and 3-0 against schools currently ranked in the AP Top 25, and that's the difference, to me.

Duke and Wake Forest both have good wins.

But Duke lost at Michigan.

And Wake Forest hasn't lost anywhere.

So that's why the Demon Deacons deserve to be No. 1 in any respectable ranking.

And you can rest assured that's where they'll be in mine -- i.e., the Top 25 (and one) -- come late Sunday night.

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

Hey, Gary, do you think Clemson should've been #1 if they'd beaten Wake then?

Don't get me wrong, Wake should be #1- I just wanted your opinion.

Wake up, voters!

Wake Forest indubitably deserves the number 1 ranking at this point in the season. No other team has as many impressive victories so far and no one else is even undefeated. Dino may also be coach of the year, even though he's working with Skip Prosser's recruits.

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

Weswillis---not only are you a homer but also an idiot. You won at home, Wake won on the road. Duke has lost, Wake hasn't. Its that easy. The mindset that you need to lose to move down is what is wrong with the voter mindset now-a-days.

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

Being ranked number 1 in a poll doesn't crown you the champ or even name you the best team in the country for the entire season.  That happens in March for sure.  But what being ranked number 1 does is give your team temporary bragging rights.  It gives small schools like Wake the recognition of a job well done.  It gives fans of the #1 ranked school something else to be proud of in their team.  Heck it may even help them in the recruiting process to continue getting guys like Teague etc...  So no, in the grand scheme of things if you are only concerned with who wins the championship at the end of the year, being ranked #1 doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot, but if you have additional goals like fan pride, or continued recruiting excellence, a number #1 ranking sure doesn't hurt.

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

I am confused.  Being a Duke fan, I will be labeled a "homer", but let me state the obvious, Wake beats the number 9 team in the nation, on the same night Duke beats number 12.   So we should automatically propel Wake ahead of Duke...I mean had Pitt won, would there be an argument to drop Duke to number 3 after the impressive win against a pretty good Georgetown team?  Louisville won, UNC won, and so did the UConn Girls, maybe we should just drop Duke out of the top 25.  I consider this a "down" year for Duke, I really don't expect to much this season, but in order for someone to catapult you in the rankings, you should either lose or win in a less impressive fashion than the team that skips you...Neither happened.

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

Wake deserves to be #1. But really who cares? This isn't college football this is a real sport. All that matters is who's holding the trophy at the end of March. That's the real #1 team.

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

Frankly, who cares?

Polls matter not a whit in college basketball, particularly at this time of year.  There's no stupid formula combining poll rankings with computer-generated nonsense about "strength of schedule" that determines who will be in the championship, much less the champion.

I'm sure it's nice to be #1, but it is essentially meaningless.  You play the season; you win your conference and/or your tournament, and you get a shot at the prize.  If you don't, the fact that you WERE #1 in the polls at some point is unlikely to help you get an at-large bid.  Your team either qualifies, on the body of work, or it doesn't.

This is what I love about college basketball, and despise about college football.

So, go ahead and celebrate, Wake Forest; go ahead and whine, Duke supporters (and Pitt supporters, who could make the case that they, like Duke, only have one loss, and it came on the road).  Who cares?

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

16-0 vs 16-1.  With 3 wins over top 25 opponents.  'Nuff said.  Cupcakes or no cupcakes undefeated still beats a one loss team.  Everyone has played some cupcakes including Duke.  Presbyterian, Ga Southern, UNC-Asheville, Montana?
