CLEMSON, S.C. -- It'll be a debate, because people love to debate.

But there really shouldn't be any debate at all.

So go ahead AP voters -- and you too, coaches -- and slot Wake Forest No. 1 on your ballots now that top-ranked Pittsburgh has lost at Louisville. Why? Because otherwise you'll be wrong, that's why. Dino Gaudio's team is 16-0 with wins over No. 5 North Carolina, No. 10 Clemson and No. 21 Baylor. One of those games was at home (UNC), one was on the road (Clemson) and the other came on a neutral court (Baylor) -- meaning the Demon Deacons have proved they can beat you here, there or over yonder, and they have all the ingredients of a traditional No. 1 team.

A star?

His name is Jeff Teague.

At least three future NBA players?

Their names are Jeff Teague, Al-Forouq Aminu and James Johnson.

A strong defense?

They have one of the five most efficient defenses in the country, according to

So while I like Duke, Connecticut and Pittsburgh plenty -- you have my permission to rank them second, third and fourth, if you want -- the reality is that none of them can match Wake Forest's body of work, if only because Wake Forest's body of work doesn't include a loss. The lone one-loss team that can even try to make a case for the No. 1 spot is Duke, which is 16-1 overall and 4-1 against schools currently ranked in the AP Top 25; that's impressive, no question. But Wake Forest is 16-0 overall and 3-0 against schools currently ranked in the AP Top 25, and that's the difference, to me.

Duke and Wake Forest both have good wins.

But Duke lost at Michigan.

And Wake Forest hasn't lost anywhere.

So that's why the Demon Deacons deserve to be No. 1 in any respectable ranking.

And you can rest assured that's where they'll be in mine -- i.e., the Top 25 (and one) -- come late Sunday night.

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

let's see what the coaches have to say in their poll, it's not tainted by a bunch of geek sports writers.  Wake is good, cough, cough, UTEP, Richmond, CS are what you eat and Wake has had a lot of cupcakes to eat so far, Duke has been eating the real deal.  Clemson has sustained themselves on cupcakes, Wake ate Clemson so what does that mean?  UNC lost to BC in the DeanDome, how good were these Wake wins?, really?  RPI, take a look at it, Wake may be the #1 team in the land but they just haven't proved it yet, look beyond the undefeated mark, look into the cupcake.

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

What are you talking about, "Nobody gave Duke a chance at the beginning of the year"?  Are you insane?  They were ranked above Wake at the beginning of the year.  Is that what you call -- not getting a chance?  As far as Duke doing it without any all-stars?  You don't call Singler an all-star?  Ok, that's fine by me.  So what.  Having all-stars means you have a chance at being great and that's what Wake is showing right now.  Duke is doing great right now too, but at this point in the season Wake has earned it more than Duke.

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

Wake Forest does deserve to be number one only after beating Duke in a week! Duke should be number one because they are doing it without any all-stars like Wake Forest! So, Duke lost to Micigan the Second time after Duke Ran them over the first time. Wake did beat Carolina but the real test comes when they face underated Duke. Nobody gave Duke a chance at the begining of the year.

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

Look to the BIG orange ball rising in the EAST. Syracuse is putting in some impressive work and looks to be a contender come March. Nevada has a better chance than Dake or wuke.

If you're referring to my posting (by daledman) when you said "have a drink" I have already had quite a few drinks and I'm still drinking. I just raised a can of the beast (Milwaukee's Best) to you. Enjoy your night/morning.

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

Okay, I know he is only stating the obvious, but sometimes it needs to be said. We all know that sometimes the voters get hung up on the preseason rankings and early season rankings and it takes someone who actually follows the game to change their votes otherwise how do you explain Tennessee still being ranked with their performance so far; no teamwork and very selfish play by a few individuals. There are plenty of other examples of the voters taking awhile to figure out who is actually playing well and deserving of a high ranking and who is not playing up to their potential or who is playing way ahead of what was expected. It happens every year but luckily it really doesn't matter in basketball like it does in football or I would be ranting right now about the current rankings. Thank God for the NCAA tournament (and no I don't think it is blasphemous to thank God for a basketball tournament because I thank Him for a lot of things that I like in my life). Anyway, I hope to see Kentucky ranked soon, as they were tied with Louisville up until the last 10 seconds or so I think and Louisville just knocked off the #1 team tonight. I know UK will have to have a couple more good wins to earn a ranking as their last win was only against Tennessee (who I just mentioned shouldn't be ranked in my opinion) but I think they are coming on strong and probably not yet in the minds of the voters if it weren't for Jodi Meeks. Where was I going with this.... Oh yeah, go Wildcats, but until the tournament or at least for another week, Wake Forest #1!

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

Yes Wake should be No. 1 at this point, hopefully will remain No.1 until they play Duke, then I personally hope Duke wins, wouldn't want Duke to be No.1 though (No.1 tends to get beat), at least until the Final game of the NCAA.

Wake Forest deserves the No. 1 ranking

Absolutely.  Wake Forest is the only perfect team in America.  I salute Wake and hope they go far.

Why is common sense like this so hard to come by in football?  Florida was not perfect in football (just ask Ole Miss); Utah was (just ask Alabama).  How can a loss to Ole Miss be better than perfection?

One more reason college basketball is the best game in America, far more than football.
