KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Duke Blue Devils will be the nation's new top-ranked team.
But should they be?
It's a fair question after Connecticut's 69-61 win at Notre Dame, because the Huskies have a comparable body of work considering they have now beaten three teams ranked in the latest AP poll (No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 20 Villanova and No. 23 Gonzaga) just like Duke has beaten three teams ranked in the latest AP poll (No. 12 Georgetown, No. 15 Xavier and No. 18 Purdue). UConn's lone loss was to No. 12 Georgetown; Duke's lone loss was at unranked Michigan. So though I'm not stating that Connecticut should be ahead of Duke, what I am stating is that the bodies of work are closer than the gap will be between the two schools when the AP and Coaches polls are released Monday.
Anyway, here are the bodies of work ...
-- Duke Blue Devils --
Overall record: 18-1
Best six wins: No. 12 Georgetown, No. 15 Xavier, No. 18 Purdue, Davidson, Michigan, Florida State
Lone loss: Michigan
-- UConn Huskies --
Overall record: 18-1
Best six wins: No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 20 Villanova, No. 23 Gonzaga, Miami, Wisconsin, West Virginia
Lone loss: No. 12 Georgetown
Given that information, which team should get the No. 1 spot?
Duke?
Or UConn?

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's closeit seems as though everyone wants to keep pointing out the fact that Duke lost to michigan and UCONN only lost to Georgetown. 1st: Duke played and blew michigan out the week before the loss. Its really hard to beat a team twice within a week and a half especially when u have to play them at home....and lets not forget that michigan isnt that bad. They also beat ucla....and were ranked themselves earlier this season.
2nd: UCONN lost georgetown. Not a bad loss at all...except when comparing them to duke seeing as how duke beat georgetown.

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's closeI'm a Duke fan, but my first thought when reading the question about who should be #1 was this:
Who cares?
It's Januray. Rankings are meaningless at this point. Duke is now #1 because they were #2 and didn't lose. So what? They'll eventually lose, and someone else will move up. Then they'll lose, and someone else will move up. On and on until March. That's the way these people who vote in polls operate. They never really vote who they think is #1 anyway. If they did, it wouldn't change nearly as often. If a team loses, they drop no matter the circumstance. Does a loss automatically mean they're not the best team? No. But they drop anyway. If Duke were to beat Wake this week, that would be a huge win. But there's still a lot of basketball to be played, and who is #1 from week to week means very little. A half-dozen teams could make a solid case for being #1 right now. But again, it's January, and it just doesn't matter.
Unlike that ridiculous system called the BCS, it all gets settled in March. Who is #1? That last team standing. And we're still a long way from that. |

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's closeI do not see duke as being number 1 at all. Now maybe my view will change a little if they can beat the current #1 on wednesday night, and beat them convincingly, but a loss to michigan??? Uconns loss to g-town is nowhere near as bad as michigan. Uconn is my numero uno. |

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's closeI think they, Conn and Duke should be tied for #1. Wins for top 25's are almost identical. UConn wins big at ND but Duke crushes Maryland who is not that bad a team. But with this wacky season, both maybe short lived. Duke will need everything plus the kitchen sink against Wake Forest, Wednesday night. |

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's closeGeorgetown should be happy with an 8 ranking, considering it's 4-4 in the Big East right. Secondly UConn is 18-1 in what is hands down the most difficult schedule, and yes they lost to Georgetown, but it was also the first serious game of the season. At least they didn't lose to Michigan. And really, Georgetown's a great team, I love the Big East, but with the present standings, Georgetown really should be happy with 8th, even if it's not reflective of they're talent. |

Really? It's close? On crack maybe...Beyond the stated fact that UConn's lone loss is to a ranked formidable opponent and Duke lost to uhh... oh yea Michigan, I cannot believe that it can still be stated it is close. Without a doubt, the BIG EAST is a league of monsterous talent and skill with the greatest strength of schedule. If you can be 18-1 in the Big East this year... you should be #1. I mean honestly, we get rid of South Florida, BC, and Va Tech and they are were our worst teams and they are middle of the pack ACC teams. I know historically everyone wants to fellate Duke cause they're "soooo awesome". That's just ridiculous because times change, move on, and count the number of NBA players from UConn vs. any other school in the country... |

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's closeI feel like UConn actually has the stronger resume, especially with their higher quality loss, but Duke has all the momentum right now. For that reason, I think Duke will get it tomorrow. Here's to hoping they lose it right away after a loss at Wake! |

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's closeUconn is good, and should be better later in the season, BUT right now I would put Duke ahead of UConn. UConn's lone loss was to Georgetown (at home). Georgetown, who ohh yea was beat by Duke. This will be close and I am a UConn fan but right now it is:
#1 Duke #2 UConn |
