Duke might be better than UConn, but it's close

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Duke Blue Devils will be the nation's new top-ranked team.

But should they be?

It's a fair question after Connecticut's 69-61 win at Notre Dame, because the Huskies have a comparable body of work considering they have now beaten three teams ranked in the latest AP poll (No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 20 Villanova and No. 23 Gonzaga) just like Duke has beaten three teams ranked in the latest AP poll (No. 12 Georgetown, No. 15 Xavier and No. 18 Purdue). UConn's lone loss was to No. 12 Georgetown; Duke's lone loss was at unranked Michigan. So though I'm not stating that Connecticut should be ahead of Duke, what I am stating is that the bodies of work are closer than the gap will be between the two schools when the AP and Coaches polls are released Monday.

Anyway, here are the bodies of work ...

-- Duke Blue Devils --

Overall record: 18-1
Best six wins: No. 12 Georgetown, No. 15 Xavier, No. 18 Purdue, Davidson, Michigan, Florida State
Lone loss: Michigan

-- UConn Huskies --

Overall record: 18-1
Best six wins: No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 20 Villanova, No. 23 Gonzaga, Miami, Wisconsin, West Virginia
Lone loss: No. 12 Georgetown

Given that information, which team should get the No. 1 spot?

Duke?

Or UConn?

I believe Duke is better than UConn and should be ranked #1. That being said, ranking at this stage in the season is just a number. If you want to know the best team in the country, look no further than Chapel Hill.  Tar Heels in 09!!!!

Or Louisville????? I am a huge Louisville fan and have followed basketball for the past 8 years. This is the best team we have ever had and they are finally coming together. They are unbeatable. They dominate their games by making the other team play the type of game they want. I have not seen to many other teams go into a game every week and weekend and dicate the tempo of every game. This team is for real gentlemen and I am calling it now.... Louisville and North Carolina in The Motor Cirty .... Peace out, GO CARDS!!!!!

You can make the argument that Connecticut or Pittsburgh deserves to be #1. But the truth is that neither team has done enough in this past week to jump ahead of Duke. If you have Duke at #2 and they have done nothing but blow out opponents, you can't put a Uconn team ahead of them.

I, too feel Pitt deserves some consideration, especially if they win convincingly at WVU.  Pitt will have two wins over  #8 and #12 and the win over WVU which has been ranked in the past and is coming off a blowout of G-Town.  Pitt's lone loss is more understandable that both UCONN and Duke, having lost to probably now top ten ranked L'Ville at their house in a tight game.  Pitt is at worst #2 in the country if they beat WVU, I can see Duke being #1.  I also see Duke losing to Wake this week and making the rankings this fun again next weekend.

Stanrod, you are an idiot. Your Duke hatred combined with your M.I.C. (Maryland Inferiority Complex) has blinded you to the point that you are no longer capable of making a comment that doesn't come across as retarded drivel. Stop embarassing yourself and your chosen school and just disappear.

CBSSportsline needs fixing. You will be next.

The banned member, who I won't mention any of his nine names, is still here. Nothing is being done. Another member dropped f bombs on a thread this am, and while FINALLY removed by an administrator, he is still here. We follow the rules, we use the system in place to deal with these issues, only to find out that the legislators empowered the gangs. A banned member is roaming the site, instigating people to file warnings, hoping for "my" dismissal. Like that stops someone that is banned from being here, LITERALLY. For those of you that just hopes this goes away, you're fooling yourself. Pipe dream to be sure. You can ignore them. Let them go from thread to thread, blog to blog, saying whatever they want. They don't have any care for the TOS of the site. They know NOTHING can stop them. What's good for the goose......

I am an American. I believe in law, and punishment, and I revere the ultimate price that has been paid for my freedoms. Two younger brothers have served this country through the military, making it their careers. The things they've seen....I'm not going to go into politics as it pertains to the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is a sports site. However, there are MILLIONS that bless Americans, wanting to be like an American. They depend on us for protection from the trolls and terrorists of the world. We know, from history, what happens when abandon a people. Or when you give complete abstinence towards the problem. The problem never goes away, the scab becomes a sore, the sore an infection, the infection a festered pool, until something has to be done.

I undertook this blog, with the full intent of seeing it through. It's no longer a choice, it's a necessity. As long as I have a voice, I'm going to act. Some don't want this much involvement. I've been told by a few I respect that this is a no win situation. I'm out to prove them wrong. My deeds would be easier accomplished if some of you that have been violated finally do something other than complain. The system in place DOESN'T WORK, and CBS knows this. An overhaul of the legislation of this site, including some SIMPLE improvements, can take away some power from the offensive. Ignore features are available everywhere; Just not here. It empowers each individual to censor what THEY don't want to read. No CBS employee need get involved, unless part of the NEW legislation needs enforced.

Members, there is one more thing CBS must do. They have to ban the IP address, making it more difficult for banned members, like the one I've been stalked NONSTOP by, from having a simple name change to come back and continue their attacks. It amazes me that someone can be banned 8 times in the last three weeks, but he kept coming right back in, breaking the same rules. He's threatened me physically, he's threatened my life, he's threatened my ouster here, and nothing is done. His voice should not even be heard here. CBS, you have failed. It's time for someone to step up, and effect change to make this site tolerable for all. If anyone of the CBS staff, or CBSSportsline administration, writers, employees, etc., want to have dialogue with me, I'll make myself available to your schedule.

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's close

"but like I said Kentucky has already beaten two of the teams that beat the team that beat UConn."

this is an atrocious argument

Stanrod, perhaps you missed the 41 point beat down Duke gave Maryland yesterday.  I don't care where Duke plays Maryland this year, the Terps don't stand a chance.  Thanks for the rest of your mighty predicitions but it's obvious that you need to start paying more attention to what is really happening and give credit where credit is due.

Duke has some experience, Wake has a bunch of athletic kids, that's why VT beat them at home.  Carolina has several sof spots, Duke has one, the 5 spot and they counter that weakness very well with a host of things that they do well, most notably, defend.  Duke will lose no more than three conference games and really, I'll be suprised if they lose that many.  As far as BC beating Duke?, once again, learn how to call a spade a spade, wake up and open your eyes, it's not going to happen, period.

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's close

Everyone who says that there's no way Duke walks out of Lawrence Joel, you might wanna rethink that.  Am I saying that Wake doesnt stand a chance, of course not, because they're very good, but Duke's pressure defense is going to give a young Wake Forest team fits.  Without Teague on the floor, they cant play with Duke, but Duke can play with some of their starters on the bench (Paulus, Thomas, and McClure could start for most teams around the country).  Its gonna be a very good game, but as long as Duke keeps it close getting to the last 7 or 8 minutes, Wake Forest is gonna be warn down and Duke will pull it out.  Their depth is going to be too much for Wake, cause unlike UNC, Duke actually plays defense.

As for the entire purpose of this thread, Duke deserves the #1 ranking.  They lost earlier in the season than UConn, and thats really all the rankings come down to.  Will they lose it in the next couple of weeks, of course they will.  They're not going undefeated in the ACC, and on that note, the rankings dont mean anything other than giving the media something to talk about.  So I dont understand why everyone is so pissed that Duke will be #1.  Its nothing other than a target on your chest, so I wouldnt want the #1 ranking
