Duke might be better than UConn, but it's close

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Duke Blue Devils will be the nation's new top-ranked team.

But should they be?

It's a fair question after Connecticut's 69-61 win at Notre Dame, because the Huskies have a comparable body of work considering they have now beaten three teams ranked in the latest AP poll (No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 20 Villanova and No. 23 Gonzaga) just like Duke has beaten three teams ranked in the latest AP poll (No. 12 Georgetown, No. 15 Xavier and No. 18 Purdue). UConn's lone loss was to No. 12 Georgetown; Duke's lone loss was at unranked Michigan. So though I'm not stating that Connecticut should be ahead of Duke, what I am stating is that the bodies of work are closer than the gap will be between the two schools when the AP and Coaches polls are released Monday.

Anyway, here are the bodies of work ...

-- Duke Blue Devils --

Overall record: 18-1
Best six wins: No. 12 Georgetown, No. 15 Xavier, No. 18 Purdue, Davidson, Michigan, Florida State
Lone loss: Michigan

-- UConn Huskies --

Overall record: 18-1
Best six wins: No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 20 Villanova, No. 23 Gonzaga, Miami, Wisconsin, West Virginia
Lone loss: No. 12 Georgetown

Given that information, which team should get the No. 1 spot?

Duke?

Or UConn?

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's close

Unlike College football, this debate is meaningless because come mid-march it's win and advance or lose and go home

Not everybody hates Kentuckey any more. We used to, but Ky is not a threat anymore. My new HATE list includes U-Con, Puke, & NC.

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's close

grewuponacc,

There is not a UK fan in the country that will say we should be #1, and mean it. If they do then they are in a dream world. If you read the post from the UK fan you will see he was asking to be in the top 25 or at least the "and 1". He was joking when he said they should be #1, see the smile face behind it. I think UK is getting better but right now our best player has a hurt hand and has not been the same since. See his shooting % the last 5-6 games. As far as rankings, I do get tired of the Cat fans worring about where we are ranked. Just let our team get better and lets hope for a decent run in March. Rankings mean nothing.

As to the subject of this thread. I can not stand Duke or Uconn. I think the Big East is stronger than the ACC, but I have thought all year long that UNC will win it all. So it does not matter that Duke will be ranked #1 come Monday. There have already been 3-4 teams ranked #1, and I think there will be 3-4 more before the end of the year. That is what is great about college basketball. You can have a bad game here and there and you still have a shot if you keep working and continue to get better.

I do think Duke wins against Uconn though, and it pains me to say that.

Read my post again.  I know that is difficult for you ACC students Tongue out, but I never said Kentucky is #1 (we are :).

I said that we should at least be in the top 25, considering we are 16 - 4, with only one bad loss (the first game of the season).

In addition we have several quality wins either on neutral, or on the opponents home court.

If Puke or UNC had our record the media would have them in the top 10!!

Everybody hates Kentucky!!Cry

I agree, if Pitt can beat WVA substantially on the road this afternoon. Caution, WVA is an agressive defensive team, very much like Pitt. Duke can have it's STAR shine for a few days as #1. It all boils down to who has learned their lessons well and who peaks in MARCH.

UConn lovers - you guys are good but don't think that the Big East "physical" style of play gives you any advantage, these are all top athletes, Duke can bang with you chumps as well as anyone.

UK lovers - VMI.  Enough said?, perhaps you should creep into the top 25 before you worry about getting close to #1.

Louisville lovers - you can wear Duke down?, ok.  Is there something wrong with the water in Kentucky or something?

the fact is that Duke is an incredibly deep team, minus the big man, who plays smothering defense, best in the nation, and has a full roster of guys who can score on you.  It's no contest right now who is playing the best, however, Duke will get a bit worn down and will lose two more in the regular season and perhaps in the ACC tourney but they will enter the big dance with no more than 4 losses.  Let's see if Pitt and UConn can do that, they need to watch out for Marquette, that's your team out of the Big East.

Something important to consider is that Duke's lone loss came to a team they've already beaten.  Michigan beat Duke at Ann Arbor during Duke's exam period, while Duke smoked Michigan on a neutral court.  Even though Michigan is unranked, in light of the above, the loss is not bad at all.

Finally, Duke just beat the team that defeated U-Conn by double digits.

Duke may or may not be the best team in the nation (most people will say it's still UNC), but Duke at this moment deserves the #1 ranking.

Unless they're in the same bracket both will get to the final four. UConn's defense, gutsiness, and depth would prevail head to head, though it would be a heck of a game.
