Duke might be better than UConn, but it's close

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Duke Blue Devils will be the nation's new top-ranked team.

But should they be?

It's a fair question after Connecticut's 69-61 win at Notre Dame, because the Huskies have a comparable body of work considering they have now beaten three teams ranked in the latest AP poll (No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 20 Villanova and No. 23 Gonzaga) just like Duke has beaten three teams ranked in the latest AP poll (No. 12 Georgetown, No. 15 Xavier and No. 18 Purdue). UConn's lone loss was to No. 12 Georgetown; Duke's lone loss was at unranked Michigan. So though I'm not stating that Connecticut should be ahead of Duke, what I am stating is that the bodies of work are closer than the gap will be between the two schools when the AP and Coaches polls are released Monday.

Anyway, here are the bodies of work ...

-- Duke Blue Devils --

Overall record: 18-1
Best six wins: No. 12 Georgetown, No. 15 Xavier, No. 18 Purdue, Davidson, Michigan, Florida State
Lone loss: Michigan

-- UConn Huskies --

Overall record: 18-1
Best six wins: No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 20 Villanova, No. 23 Gonzaga, Miami, Wisconsin, West Virginia
Lone loss: No. 12 Georgetown

Given that information, which team should get the No. 1 spot?

Duke?

Or UConn?

I think you are wrong, I may be a little biased, but like I said Kentucky has already beaten two of the teams that beat the team that beat UConn.

I know that is a few degrees of seperation, but Kentucky has only had one bad loss, and that was the first game of the season.

I know a lot of people hate Kentucky, but I am not sure why.  I am not saying we should be number 1 (we should :), but look at the overall body of work.  Top 25, or at least "and 1" should not be out of the question.

So you think that L'VILLE is not one o the best teams in conf. I'd watch L'VILLE play DUKE they just knocked off #1PITT.

YES they beat them at home not on the road but they have endless aths. to wear down DUKE.

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's close

Another ACC lover let them play on a neutral court and put up some money and I'll take UCONN.

Duke  is not the strongest team even in its conf.

Uconn is the strongest in the BIG EAST

THE Big East plays a more phy. game and DUKE is not a PHY. team

Kentucky would get blown out by Duke, Uconn, Wake Forest, Okl, etc.

Let me get this straight.  You think that Puke (forgive me, I can't stand them) and UConn are the two best teams in the country, and you have Georgetown #8.  Georgetown (at 12 - 5) beat UConn, while they lost handily to both Tenn. and WVU.

Kentucky (at 16 - 4) beat WVU (on a neutral floow) and smoked Tenn. (in Knoxville), and you don't even think they are worthy of "and 1" status??

Yes, we had one bad loss to a mid-major the first game of the season (VMI) but our other 3 loses are to North Carolina (the second game of the season), a very good Miami (Fl) team, and Louisville (on a last second shot).

Funny how we Kentucky fans always think the media is biased against us, huh?

I do not underestimate any of the teams you have listed above but I certainly would add Pittsburgh into the mix.  In fact with Pittsburgh included I believe these teams are the top programs and should do well in March.

I do believe that you may be a little biased towards the ACC looking at your list.  I do appreciate the talent of North Carolina and the other teams but would not agree with your assertion that UCONN is the fifth best.  Pittsburgh and Connecticut are as talented as any of the teams listed.  North Carolina would be challenged by both Pittsburgh and Connecticut's front courts.

I believe that it will come down to who has the most heart come March.  There is no clear favorite  among these teams and I am sure that there are a few other programs that will make an impact.

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's close

I just saw on espn is listing wednesdays game Jan 28th Duke vs Wake Forest.....as Duke#2 and Wake Forest #1 ....nationally televised ads for the game....Whats up with that? ....especially with Wake losing to Virgina Tech... As far as Duke or UCONN I believe that question is a 55%-45% Duke over UCONN....but I still think Pittsburgh will be the toughest team to beat in late March!!!

Duke is better than UCONN, but would probably lose head to head for lack of a significant post presence to handle Thabeet and Adrien. But Wake Forest is better than Duke, and will beat them Wednesday night. And UNC is better than all three. Yes, they lost to Wake, but it was at Wake and by only 3 points. UNC shouldn't have been within 10 having shot 35% for the game, but they had a decent chance at overtime. BC was inexcusable, and probably why UNC doesn't really deserve the number 1 ranking, despite the fact that they are the best team as in 2005, when they were never ranked number 1. So, I'd say 1. Duke, 2. Oklahoma, 3. Wake, 4. UNC, 5. UCONN, though after Wednesday things might get odd if Wake blows Duke out, which they could well do with their vastly superior frontline and Jeff Teague.

Duke might be better than UConn, but it's close

It's a semi-interesting debate, but technically moot question.  By way of unwritten ratings rules Duke already has it in the bag.

And not to be a spoil sport, but this early in the season the top 5 ratings don't mean too much.  It may turn out that Duke's win over Georgetown ends up being less impressive than Conn's win over West Virginia.
