The Irish are the nation's biggest disappointment

Notre Dame endured yet another loss -- a blowout at UCLA -- early Saturday.

Then its day actually got worse.

Because Texas subsequently lost at Nebraska, meaning  the Irish's best win in a season that features few hardly qualifies as a good win anymore. Meantime, the only other NCAA tournament-caliber school Notre Dame has topped (Georgetown) also lost Saturday (to Cincinnati). And when you combine all these developments and sort through the mess the only reasonable conclusion to reach is that Luke Harangody isn't going to play in the NCAA tournament.

From preseason Top 10 to midseason WTF.

The Irish have now lost seven consecutive games to fall to 12-10, and that they didn't even show up at UCLA might be the biggest concern of all. Faced with a must-win scenario (or at least something close to it), Notre Dame fell behind big early, let UCLA shoot 55.7 percent from the field and eventually lost 89-63. If it sounds bad, that's because it was bad. And with Louisville next on the schedule there's no reason to think the Irish won't be 12-11 heading into next weekend's game against South Florida.

Bottom line, this is almost certainly done.

Even if the Irish win every remaining home game (including the one against Louisville) and split at West Virginia and Providence before losing at Connecticut, they're going to have 13 losses on Selection Sunday unless they somehow win the Big East tournament. Put another way, even the best-case scenario (within reason) has them with 13 losses, and because they won't have the quality wins to offset such a number, this Notre Dame team is set to go down as the biggest disappointment of the season, which is awful because there sure were high hopes back in August.

I remember talking to Mike Brey by phone on a Sunday afternoon last Fall.

It was the weekend before he took his team to Ireland for a preseason tour of exhibitions, and at the time he almost laughed about how ridiculous his schedule would be, though he seemed confident he had a team of veterans capable of handling it. I agreed. But as it turns out, we were both wrong, way more wrong than either of us could've imagined, because now the Irish are sitting here with a 12-10 record, and nobody is laughing anymore.

The Irish are the nation's biggest disappointment

This team might be lucky to win 2 more games. The Irish might be "lucky".......that is awesome. The "luck of the Irish" appears to be the other end of the rainbow this year.

Another dissapointment would have to be Texas, but they should still make the dance.

Obviously a coach is ultimately responsible, but Brey shouldn't be fired...yet. Brey should learn from ole Roy....if you are not going to have your team ready to play....wait until it's one of the biggest games of the season, then have them not ready to play. Like every "dance" game when he was here at Kansas. Or last years Final Four game with Kansas.

who would have thought that ND's basketball/football record would have lived up to their rankings. oh wait, they don't. people on the east coast just assume they are great when they are obviously not. I used to live with tyrone's football ball program and we didn;t win a game this year, but at least you can still get some political funding and find a way to fight yourself.  The biggest problem is that ND isn't so much on the east coast, but really the mid west. I'm loving 5 from the pac 10. but I guess I don't share the entusiasm of the other pollers only becauce most are of the "let all of the big east/acc in crowd in" mind set, because there is an east coast bias, and eight bids are enough, right?

The Irish are the nation's biggest disappointment

i don't know. the team isn't even showing up to play anymore. that would have to be blamed on the head coach. i seriously doubt he'll be fired soon. however, if this trend continues, i don't think nd has much of a choice.

How long till Brey gets fired? This is a question the ND administration should seriously be considering.Mike Brey is an excellent coach, two time big east coach of the year (at least) I dont think hes going anywhere and he shouldnt.

Notre Dum-Dum-Dum!!!! (Cue the Thunder)

I was never on board with the Irish. Never have thought they cared too much about defense, and well, they don't. And I like what "zcg" had to say abou the NIT. He or she is right. This could be as star-studded a National Invitational Tournament as we have ever seen. I used to think Kentucky would be favored in every game going forward until the finale in Gainesville. But after these three bizarre losses and looking at the schedule, I believe they could lose every upcoming game, except maybe for the home game against Georgia. Of course I don't believe UK will have that kind of freefall, but I didn't believe they'd lose at home to South Carolina and Mississippi State either. From here on in, total crapshoot.

How long till Brey gets fired? Better question:  how long till Parrish gets fired for being just like every other East Coast/Big East blind media stooge and making us all think that Notre Dame (and Georgetown, etc.) were among the best teams in the country while ignoring the fact that the country now extends past the Mississippi River?

im suprised not to see any kentucky fans bashing notre dame on here. it seems whenever  notre dame or georgetown lose(two teams kentucky doesnt play) they seem to think its some kind of moral victory . maybe becuase they complained weeks ago about being ranked behind them! I just find it funny that most uk fans comeplain about these two schools!

The Irish are the nation's biggest disappointment

I'm starting to wonder when Notre Dame gets another win.  If they don't beat South Florida they may not win until Feb 25th against Rutgers.  This team might be lucky to win 2 more games.

Hopefully 14-16 overall is enough to get them in the NIT.

There's absolutely no way Indiana is making the NIT
