Memphis basketball in orange and purple uniforms?

A source close to the school told CBSSports.com early Friday that there were plans for Memphis to hold a FedEx Appreciation Night during Wednesday's game against SMU -- at FedExForum, it's worth noting -- in which the Tigers would wear FedEx's orange and purple colors instead of their traditional blue and white. In fact, jerseys had been developed. But by Friday afternoon -- after questions started being asked -- a separate source told CBSSports.com that FedEx and Memphis nixed the plan, fearing a backlash both locally and nationally about an NCAA team blurring the lines between amateur sports and commercial revenue.

FedEx is a Memphis-based company that heavily supports the University of Memphis.

According to a source, the NCAA had been contacted.

Memphis was told it could wear the colors as long as the word "FedEx" didn't appear anywhere.

Memphis ends plans to wear orange and purple

If I'm Coach Cal, I'm still upset at the FedEx CEO for screwing up my recruiting of one of the top PG's (Abdul Gaddy) in the country by calling his FedEx-employed mom to talk hoops (which of course he does with all his thousands of employees).  I can imagine the NCAA, who I'm imagining is already looking into the other incident, would have found this promotion interesting.

I mean after all, what do the Tigers' players do in the off-season?  Summer jobs at FedEx corporate perhaps???

Memphis ends plans to wear orange and purple

I think the Memphis AD R.C. Johnson "absolutely, positively" should not have backed off this idea.  He should have rehired that fast-talking guy from the 80's commercials to explain to the media why they were doing this and stuck to his guns.  They just flat out botched this one all around.  I imagine some of the high rollers of the program were envious of the attention that the 5,000 pound gorilla corporation was going to get from this, as if the naming rights on the building weren't enough.

I don't know, I think this could have been tastefully done, like most nude scenes in movies, for example.  They could have done the purple and orange stripes on the sides of the unis, giving the team a Tiger look.  Perhaps the players who sport headbands and wraps could use purple/orange ones for a change.  Purple shoes with orange shoelaces?

Heck with it.  Time to moveon.org on this one, though; it's old news.  Sounds like Calipari was ticked at how this played out.  Wonder if they'll go ahead and do this anyway.

Memphis ends plans to wear orange and purple

I think Memphis should wear crimson and blue for a game this year in honor of the 2008 Men's National Champions.

I think Kansas should donate the money they paid for Darrell Arthur's transcripts to be fix to Memphis. Money mouth

Memphis ends plans to wear orange and purple

Teams shouldn't wear arena-sponsor colors: Imagine the NBA if that were true: Quicken Loans Arena: Cavaliers: Red and White Staples Center: Lakers: Red and White Target Center: Timberwolves: Red and White AT&T Center: Spurs: White and Blue U.S. Airways Arena: Suns: White and Black American Airlines Center: Heat: Silver/Red&Blue American Airlines Arena: Mavericks: Silver/Red&Blue Verizon Center: Wizards: Red and Black Pepsi Center: Nuggets: Red, Blue & White Time Warner Cable Arena: Bobcats: Blue & Dark Gold United Center: Bulls: Grey, Red & Blue Philips Arena: Hawks: Blue & White And more... The point I'm trying to make is that no matter what, wearing the colors of a sponsor generates similar-same colors for every team, they're tacky as hell, and they create something corporate overdone out of a historic sport and franchise. Bad idea all the way.

just FYI but the reason for the colors of FedEx had nothing to do with the arena being named FedExForum(Grizzlies own the building and get the money for naming rights), but more of the general support from FedEx. Throughout the year they sponsor games for basketball and football and buy tickets in bulk to pass out to their employees.

Not sure if this has been posted but here's the link for anyone wanting to see the jerseys...

Memphis ends plans to wear orange and purple

That would have been a backlash alright Laughing. Are you kidding me? I understand Memphis is playing an arena with the FedEx next to forum but come on. That would have been ridiculous right there. Keep Memphis the way it is.

i do agree with your comment that you do play in there arena. i also agree with another comment that said what is the big deal. i am an fedex employee and i am very proud that my company does as much work to help there community as any other co does. every time i here something st work it is always how fedex is planning a new project to buy this or buy that. some people dont understand inorder to get something today is is really good to have a company as large as fedex with there name on your gym or our name on a race car or for that matter our name on a football stadium. well good luck memphis it would have been interesting to watch that game with our colors on display.

Memphis ends plans to wear orange and purple

I think that is the biggest reason they should never have considered this idea.  Orange looks ugly enough on the Vols.  Surely the Tigers have too much class and pride to want to look that bad!
